Pre-diagnosis support

Hello, I had a breast cancer screening yesterday after finding a lump the size of half a grape in my left boob. A clinician did a physical test then send me back to do a ultrasound then a biopsy. The people doing the biopsy said that I would go back to see the clinician to book my results appointment. I didn’t expect any kind of results today so was completely shocked when the clinician told me that they high suspect it was cancer. I ask them if they were sure and they said they were pretty sure but needed the biopsy to confirm the results. They said I would be booked to see the consultant to discuss the results and treatment. Is it usual that they can tell you during this appointment without biopsy results? They said my lymph nodes looked fine, is this a good sign? Should I prepare myself for the worst or is there a chance they could be wrong? Any support would be great as I feel like I’m spiralling and feel so useless not knowing anything.

  • Hi Sass,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

Consultants deal with cancer every day and can often predict cancer without having to see the biopsy results. They feel that it is kinder to tell somebody at this stage and give them time to come to terms with the condition before they get their biopsy results back. I have been told this on 3 separate occasions. Fortunately, they were wrong on one count, but were right on the other two. Try not to panic - hard, I know! Not all lumps are cancerous and, even if they are, some types are more aggressive than others. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer. Despite having 2 bouts of cancer and 1 of pre-cancer all within a year from diagnosis, I am still here 16 years on.

I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer, but there was just no comparison between the experiences which we both had. Diagnosis, treatment and after care have made tremendous advances recently. Try to steer clear of consulting "Dr Google" while you're waiting for your results. Much of the information there is poorly researched, out of date and aimed at the most spectacular cases. Instead of putting your mind to rest. This won't give you any answers and will only serve to worry yourself further. Keep yourself busy during this wait - it doesn't matter whether this is with work or enjoyment - anything to take your mind off the wai

Please keep in touch and let us know how your appointment with the consultant goes. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,
