Confused over treatment for actinic keratosis

Hi everyone

I've been diagnosed with a 'grade 1' actinic keratosis on the bridge of my nose, which the GP said she'd treat if I was keen. I didn't know what the diagnosis meant to begin with but  after going back and saying I'd prefer to treat the problem  I've been given 'Tolak' which seems to be like efudix but not as strong ( the GP said efudix has been discontinued).  I'd appreciate anyone's experience on the following queries.

Has anyone used tolak and is it as  effective as efudix in people's experience?

The GP told me to put the cream on at night and wash off in the morning, use sunscreen and it would be fine to go to work (I work outdoors as a countryside ranger and told her this). However, the instructions say to avoid UV light for the duration of the treatment so I'm not sure whether it might be better to go back and ask for the one-off freezing treatment. Are the advice of hats and sunscreen sufficient when using the cream?

Thanks!

  • Hi Tcubed

Im using efudix right now to treat Actinic Keratosis on my cheek and shoulder.so it is still available but understand there are supply issues. Tolak is just as good as efudix and nearly same strength. It is tricky using on face nose as it can get in your eyes. Contrary to instructions it is better to apply in morning and wash off before bedtime. If you apply before going to bed it will rub off onto pillow and get on your eyelids eyes which is misery. If you have option to have it frozen go for that. It will leave a small white scar though. Hope this is of help.

  • Thank you for your reply. That makes sense about putting it on in the morning!
