Worried: I am 74 and have post menopausal bleeding

Hi, I am 74 and have post menopausal bleeding.  I have seen my GP and she did an internal examination, she said my cervix is inflamed and saw blood around it. She has urgently referred me for scan to see what could be going on.  I am so worried it could be cancer because of my age as I read the longer it is after menopause you are more likely to have something serious going on. It is also painful after sex and have to run to toilet and sometimes don’t make it in time. I know a lot of you are younger and things haven’t been serious for you but because I am this age I am really worried.
Thanks  for listening.

  • It's good that you've seen your GP and that a referral has been made. I hope you won't have to wait too long. Try not to overthink, try not to Google. Distract yourself with activities you enjoy.

If you haven't heard anything in a couple of weeks, contact your GP again.

    Wishing you well.

    Helen

Thank you so much Helen, your kind words are very helpful. I had bloods taken toda including ca125 for any signs of markers so it’ll be another few nights with no sleep which is when I overthink. Un ortunately we always think the worst, just human nature as too much to lose ️x

  • I agree with Helen, if you haven't heard anything in two weeks re contact the doctor. Keep on top of it and be persistent as these things can slide. Im not sure the blood tests always pick it up so not necessarily 100 percent accurate but double check this with the doctor.

  • Thanks MaggiMay I definitely won’t be leaving it as I have  a holiday soon and even though this pales into insignificance, I do need to know if I have to cancel etc.  My head is all over the place and I feel like screaming! I suppose everyone here would feel the same waiting on results. X

  • Hi all, just an update, I have had results from CA125 and that is showing 25 which ones under the ‘normal’ range. I know these could still mean there could be something sinister going on as not 100% reliable. I also have an appointment for a gynaecology US on 21st of this month.
My husband and I are in such an awkward position re our holiday as the cut off date for a refund and wouldn’t  lose our deposit is the 24th,  after then it is only the deposit we would lose along with Ryanair flights,  who do not refund even in cases of illness, unfortunately the downfall of budget airlines!

Does anyone know,  if a biopsy is taken, how long it takes for the results to come back as I still have to get insurance but lots of companies do not insure you with an undiagnosed condition. Any advice would be gratefully received.
I know a holiday pales into insignificance when there could be a risk of a cancer diagnosis, but money is tight when a pensioner.
Thanks and apologies for the long spiel.
