Breast issues - going crazy

Hi all,

I found a tiny lump in my breat around 6 weeks ago. It was post ovulation so I waited until after my period as my breasts really change during my periods and I know that I have cysts. Following my period it was still there but I put off going to the GP.

I saw the GP 8 days ago as my boob was very swollen. Clearly a different size to my other one and feeling solid. The GP referred me straight away to the breast clinic for a 2ww appointment. I have an appointment but not until April 21st as they have a 6 week back log.

I have had days of my breast itching and some sharp stabbing pain. Today it has been really itchy and now its is painful, like a burning/stabbing feeling where the lump is.

It's really quite uncomfortable but I don't know what else I can do. I havevakready asked to be put on the cancellation list.

Obviously I am driving myself crazy worrying that this is cancer and things could be getting worse while I'm waiting. Just looking for any advice or someone else to chat to who understands the anxiety.

Thanks,

Sam

  • Hi Sam,

You did the right thing to go to the GP after experiencing these breast issues and noticing that your breast was very swollen and a different size to the other one. It's good that the GP was thorough and that they have referred you to the breast clinic - it's a shame they have a bit of a backlog at the moment but it's good you have an appointment sorted for the 21st of April - not too long to wait now to be seen but I can imagine it can't come soon enough for you.

When you do have your appointment at the breast clinic, make sure you mention that your breast is itching and you are experiencing sharp stabbing pain as well as the painful burning sensation you describe. I think you did the right thing in asking to be put in the cancellation list and I hope that you will manage to be seen earlier.

It is normal to be anxious while waiting and it can be a time when you feel understandably restless and it is tempting to try to anticipate what it might be and to imagine the worst case scenario. It's important to remember though that being referred to be seen at the breast clinic doesn't mean that you will be diagnosed with cancer but it does mean that you will get some answers soon and a proper thorough check up and also treatment - if needed - to deal with your current issues. If the itchiness increases or any of your symptoms get worse while you are waiting to be seen, it wouldn't hurt to flag this with your GP and you could mention that your appointment is not until the 21st of April due to their backlog and your doctor might be able to pass on additional information on the progression of your current symptoms if need be.
