Urgent referral to the breast clinic. No info on what to expect or waiting times. I'm feeling scared and alone

Hello…

about 2 weeks ago I noticed a smooth hard lump in the side of my right breast.
visited the GP today. Knew I’d likely get a referral as that’s the procedure, but I was hoping for some reassurance… something like “it could be this, or that, but I’ll refer you to make sure…”

but instead she looked concerned, commented on how big it was and told me she’d refer me. No info on what to expect or waiting times.

I’m now even more anxious than before I saw the GP. Obviously thinking the absolute worst.

had some bad news about a relatives cancer treatment this week so don’t want to tell my family for now until I know more…

also don’t want to scare or worry my husband so haven’t spoken to anyone about this.

just feeling scared and alone right now…

  • Hello,i had a routine mammogram 4 weeks ago, 2 weeks later was sent a letter saying i had been referred to a breast clinic for more investigation.I broke my arm before xmas and havent examined myself for months due to wearing a cast. A mammogram, ultrasound and core biopsy was carried out.The radiographer said nothing in terms of what she saw or potential reasons for what was seen on mammogram.I was then ushered out of room and a breast nurse asked me if i had the lump for a while! i didnt know i had a lump.I do now as i have been making a conscious effort to feel it with my injured hand.I have another appointment in 2 weeks with breast consultant.I too am going out of my mind.Happy to chat if it helps

  • Hi. Thanks for replying.
sorry you’re having to go through this. Just waiting is awful and my mind is spiralling… I’m trying to avoid Google as much as possible.
my appt has come through for 23rd April! That’s 5 weeks away! I thought it was supposed to be within 2 weeks so I’m gutted.
Have you got people to talk to about it? I have, but don’t want them to worry…

I hope your arm is getting better at least x

  • Hello! Dr Google isnt really sensible i too know this. However it was only through googling that i arrived at this website. Wow 23rd April, that is ages,do you live in the UK?My Daughter is a Doctor and son at university, i havent yet mentioned it as they will both be so worried.Maybe the support you have would want you to mention to them?

  • Yeah I live in Scotland.
it’s wild isn’t it. I might call the GP and ask if it was referred as urgent. 5 weeks is crazy.
I’m sure my husband will want to know. I’ll try and tell him soon. I actually feel guilty about it. I don’t want to worry anyone. Which is madness, I know.

  • i feel your husband would be cross that you going through this without including him.Can i ask how big your area is? and is it solid hard? yes call GP good idea or can you get a mammogram done anywhere?

  • It’s pretty big… it just seemed to appear from nowhere! It’s hard.  It moves around and it’s smooth. It’s on the side of my right breast between my armpit and nipple.

  • Hi, it sounds very similar to mine. Its awful the worry is enormous. Please message if you want a chat

  • Thank you so much. I hope all goes well at your appt. Let me know how you get on. ️
