Suspected breast cancer in doctors note!?!

I had a diagnosis of fibroadenoma in my right breast 2018 and a biopsy of another behind my left nipple in 2021. Both were okay.  Skip to late 2025 and my health anxiety is huge as ive had a paternal aunt and grandmother both die of cancers after staying clear for 5+ years.  I found bilateral lymphnodes that slip when I touch them but are firm. As well as that I cant really feel my fibroadenoma anymore. So I went to the doctor who said she could feel thickening over the fibroadenoma on the right and would refer me because they have to, because of history and some changes.

I looked on the patient access app and my letter said referral for suspected breast cancer?! Do they have to do this to get me referred?  Because seeing that paralysed me.

I also found a hard lump under my jaw floating under my chin, im also getting weird symptoms like motion sickness so that's being ultrasounded at the end of this month. So im having lots of anxieties about my health and seeing suspected cancer in letters just made it 10x worse.

  • Hi, I can understand you anxiety it is so worring not having answers. I wonder if your doctors put suspected cancer as this would put you on 'the cancer pathway.' This means that you would probably be seen quicker as you have to be seen and treatment started, (if necessary) within 62 days.

Try to stay positive and talk to friends and family for support.

Wishing you the very best x

  • Hi Sunshinegirl30,

A very warm welcome to the forum.

I am so sorry to hear that you have lost your paternal aunt and grandmother to cancer and I send my condolences.

Don't stress too much about the cancer pathway for referral. This is the normal mode of referral for breast symptoms. You can either be referred under the normal referral policy, in which case you can have quite a wait to be seen, or more commonly, under the 'urgent pathway', in which case you should receive a date for the breast clinic within 2 weeks of the referral being received. This doesn't necessarily mean that you'll be seen within 2 weeks, but that you will get a date to be seen. Although you may have been unaware that this was the case, you would have been referred under the same pathway for your Fibroadenomas.

It is a fact that only 20% of those who attend the clinic will get a cancer referral - the other 80% tend to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma, 'nothing abnormal detected (NAD), etc. Many of us get lymph node swelling in response to minor infections. These usually return to normal after the infection subsides, although not always. Hopefully the one under your chin is due to something like a sore throat or a toothache. I may be wrong, but I have never heard of motion sickness appearing in conjunction with a cancer diagnosis, but I hope that you find a solution to this problem too. It is not unusual for us to notice all sorts of additional problems while waiting for a diagnosis. Fortunately, this is usually more due to the stress of waiting and these symptoms, although seeming very real at the time, often tend to settle automatically after we get a diagnosis.

Many of us would agree that this wait tends to be the worst parts of our cancer journey. I hope that your appointment comes through soon and that you have a good outcome. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
