Breast biopsy result pending...The wait is really getting to me

Im going out of my mind with worry... I found a few lumps in my breasts 3 months ago...im 40 so assumed it was just cysts.. I went to the Dr's to get it checked on the 13th Feb, they referred me to urgent breast clinic and was seen within a week. The consultant that checked me over agrees it was probably a cyst..I had mammogram and then I had an ultrasound on my right breast and he was quite blunt saying its just normal breast tissue..he then scanned my left breast and was very silent and said OH... I need to do a biopsy there is something... he didnt elaborate or even really speak to me about what it could be..I was very shocked and just didnt speak or move..untill it was done..they just told me that id get the results in 2-3 weeks!  I don't know what to think especially as he was so different on the left side...I have previously had cin2 and had treatment for that with clear smear tests since but im due one.. my sister who has a different dad has got the brca gene mutation... I don't know what to think... and the wait is really getting to me... sorry for the long post....

  • Hi Kat1986,

I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and to offer you my support whilst you wait for your results.

I know this must be very difficult, especially after seeing how your consultant reacted but if you can, try not to jump to any conclusions or assume the worse. Easier said than done, I know, but I hope these tips we have on how to cope with waiting for news will help to steady your nerves, and your mind, until you know more.

So many of our members know how tough this time can be, so you are not alone Kat, and hopefully it won't be long until you receive some support and advice.

If it would help to talk any of this through with one of cancer nurses, they are available on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m. They will do all they can to address your concerns and support you whilst you wait.

Fingers crossed your results come through soon Kat, and that you receive good news.

    All the best,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Hi Kat,

The hardest and most sereal situation is where you are right now, it feels like a dream that you want to wake up from. I understand as I have been going through the same.

In the early days waiting for results is truly one of the hardest things I have ever had to endure.

My only advice I can give, is talk to people about what ever you are comfortable with, and don't talk about what you are not. Stop people talking if you are unable to deal with it or if it stresses you out. I went through a very tough time where some people naturally said the right things and others didn't. I detached where I had to for self preservation.

Talk as much as you are able during the day, about any fears etc if you can, as I found the more I spoke during the day, the better I slept at night. The days I didn't talk, the moment I put my head on the pillow my mind started racing.

You need your sleep, so be kind to yourself.

I also tried not to speculate on what could happen. I only need to deal with the actual facts. Deal with what you need to at the time that you need to deal with it.

I am two weeks out of a masectomy, healing and feeling great.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes

  • Hi, thank you for your reply and advice I really appreciate it. Especially as your just out of surgery yourself! I hope your healing well and your on the road to recovery! It feels like your in limbo..at this point..im not amy closer to a result I did contact the hospital to see if they had my results yet..but that was a really confusing conversation..im still none the wiser if they are back yet...but she did say she would chase it up and contact me back... in my mind im thinking its all ok as its been so long...and so feel a bit more settled than when I wrote the original post..

I really appreciate your support thank you!

  • Personally I would keep pushing everyday for an appointment or an update. I seem too think that my biopsy results came back within 2 weeks, but different hospital different timelines. I had lots of administrative errors, with appointments and information, letters not sent etc... so do not be afraid to ask more questions, and push hard if they do not give you answers. it's your right to know that they are dealing with you correctly.

I understand that there are also government guidelines on the number of days that they need to respond and take any necessary action etc, like book appointments. If you feel you are not being heard, report concerns to the PAL team at the hospital.

I am due to go back on Monday for my op results and my forward treatment plan. Overall I am very happy with timeline of first diagnosis to having my mastectomy. It just feels a lot longer in reality.

    Good luck x
