New here: doctor told me my breast lump was suspicious after performing a biopsy

Hello there. I am new here 53 year old mum of two beautiful adult children.... Back in December I noticed a slight Inversion in my nipple. I checked my breast and couldn't feel anything. Roll on the beginning of Feb and my nipple was still partially inverted and this time my breast had changed shape and yes there was now a lump. Fast forward doctor send me to breast clinic where they sent Mr for a mammogram and then a more details mammogram and then during the ultrasound they said they were going to perform a biopsy. Just before they did this I asked the doctor was this just precautionary and he put his hand on my arm and told me we would talk after. After the biopsy and the the clip was put in I went for another mammogram and then was shown into a small room..the doctor and a nurse came in he said your lump is suspicious do you understand what I am saying..I just remembered nodding..I was in agony from the biopsy and I was still shaking from the pain. I didn't ask any questions which of course now I could kick myself for so my question is does the doctor always do this after they perform a biopsy. I know it seems like a stupid question but I am so confused. By telling me it is suspicious is it warning me. My appointment is on the 9th March for my results.

  • Hi, I had the same tests as you around 18 months ago after being called back after a routine mammogram. I was told the lump needed to be checked out, which I guess is another way of saying it was suspicious. Like you, I was in a bit of a state of shock and didn’t ask any further questions. In my case, it was cancer - but hand on heart, that wait for the results appointment was the worst bit for me. I had to ask my GP for sleeping pills as I was so stressed. Once I had the disgnosis and knew what the plan was, I felt so much better. I hope you have some support and that it ends up being nothing xxx

  • Thank you. So sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I think the sleeping at the moment is the worst. In the daytime I can keep busy and positive but laying in bed at night all sorts of what if creep in..

    How are you doing?  Xx

  • I’d never really suffered from insomnia before, and it turns out I’m not someone who copes on limited amounts of sleep, so having sleeping pills for those few weeks really helped me face the wait. I’m fine now thanks - my local NHS were fantastic and I got treated very quickly. I had surgery (mammoplasty, so kept my boob, more or less), 5 sessions of radiotherapy and now on hormone blockers for 5 years. My risk of recurrence after treatment is 3%, which I’m pretty happy with. There are lots of different breast cancers and lots of new treatments, so try to stay positive. Easier said than done, I know!
