Fit test 300 - being referred urgently and I'm terrified

Hi all, absolutely terrified.  Just did a QFit test last week and reading is 300, had one a year ago and it was 7.  i recently had my piles banded which didnt work and mentioned this to the Dr who said she would do another Q Fit.  I dont have any other symptoms and no family history but i have severe health anxiety.  I am 42 and the Dr said they would refer me urgently but i am terrified.

Just wanted to get it off my chest.

  • If it's any reassurance, when I was 40, I had rectal bleeding regularly for months, some weight loss, trapped wind and loose stools maybe once a week and the doctor said he would be concerned if my mother came with those symptoms but that at my age, the risk of cancer was "less than 1%". It turned out to be piles, probably combined with the effects of my thyroid medication and maybe the stress of the whole thing.

A positive FIT test can be caused by many things - polyps, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's, diverticulitis, an infection, etc - and at your age, cancer is probably one of the less likely options.

  • Thank you very much for your reply and reassurance.  That has helped.  I have my colonoscopy a week today so fingers crossed.

Hi there, Just an update, i had my colonoscopy yesterday and everything came back clear thankfully.  Turns out my fit test was 385! so hopefully that lessens peoples worries who have had a high enough score.

Have to say my experience was very positive in that i was anxious and upset when i went in but the nurse spent time with me and calmed me down.  My blood pressure was too high but managed to bring this down (i suffer with white coat syndrome).  I also was going for sedation but changed my mind and just had gas and air due to wanting to drive my kids to shcool and be at work.  Yes, i was worried for the hour or so i was waiting but can honestly say it was very manageable in my experience.  The consultant and nurses were so amazing, calmed me down and reassured me.  I cannot thank them enough and i am obviously so relieved and feel very lucky.  The consultant put it well and said if there is something to worry about you are in the right place.  I hope everyone has a positive outcome and for those that don't you are in my prayers.
