My partners cough

I’m so worried, my partner has had a cough for some time,

he has finally gone to the Drs, had blood tests chest x ray and now being referred for a ct scan and breathing test.

i suffer with severe health anxiety after losing my dad to cancer years ago.

it never leaves me, im so worried my partner has something serious.

i know I shouldn’t look online but unfortunately i do, and seeing this like lung cancer is terrifying me.

My partner takes it all in his stride bless him, he says he will worry when he knows he has something to worry about.

i know im looking for reassurance here, and that we’ve got to go through this process.

i always fear the worst

  • I think some people are born with an extra "worry" gene and can't help think of the worst in a given situation. I don't seem to have a worry gene at all so despite having had 2 types of cancer, a stage 4 diagnosis and  several procedures including ablation last week , it's just not in me worry. I know my husband worries all the time. I don't think this is a particularly helpful post for you but maybe try to limit your worry sessions to a certain length of time and then do/think about something else?

I do very much hope you're worrying in vain!

  • Hello ,

I had a cough for about three years . Various treatments tried , it was thought at one time nasal drip could be the cause . Also was it because I suffer with acid reflux , medication increased for that , ok for a while but still had the cough .  Over time had a couple of chest X-rays came back normal .  Nothing seemed to resolve the cough . I thought it could have been an after effect of having caught Covid when in hospital but my thought was disregarded .

Earlier this year I went back to gp and was  prescribed a steroid inhaler whilst waiting for a ct scan . Scan done really quickly bit of a wait for results then I had a breathing test which was normal . Result of the scan was mild bronchiestasis (probably spelt wrong) and possible asthma .

I am at the moment on medication ( hopefully short term ) being treated for late onset asthma  .  It is a bit of a long process but I am coughing less often and hoping this treatment could be the fix .

Dont know if this update will help ease your mind or not  but  the circumstances did sound a bit similar  . The reason I am on this forum is unrelated to the cough  .  I have precancerous cells nothing to do with the cough .  Take care and regards to you both .

  • Hi Jazzle I have very similar symptoms as you ,I too developed a cough and Asthma after a bad bout of covid about 4 years ago ,I have a steroid inhaler ,earlier this year I had a CT scan which diagnosed Bronchiectasis ,I just wondered what treatment you have for it ,they didn't give me anything apart from Asthma inhalers ...

  • Hello Jenny3109 ,

There was no medication prescribed for the Bronchiestasis only for the asthma . The inhaler medication was changed and the dose increased . The plan is if I feel that the cough is getting better I can try leaving the inhaler off . I am gradually having the doses decreased if I can’t cope I’m to see go again . For the bronchiestasis I was told to be careful and do my best not to get any chest infections , as in keep away from anyone with that kind of infection . Which could be difficult how are you really going to know . Suppose it could be wise to wear a mask again in hospitals or other vulnerable environments. So pretty much the same as yourself with the inhaler .

i do still wonder though if it is anything to do with Covid , I never stopped coughing when I had that . I don’t really know uch about the bronchiestasis .

    Take care .
