Waiting times for breast clinic appointment. I've been told by my hospital that it is 40 weeks for a routine referral!

Hi everyone, so basically I am 31 years old female with a new, strange shaped lump in my outer right breast. It is about 2-3 centimetres in diameter so I decided to get it checked out in September.

Fast forward to today, I still have no appointment letter so I phoned the hospital to be informed that the current wait times for the breast clinic is 40 weeks for a routine referral!

I have had a lump removed in the past and that was a B3 papilloma. I thought I would be put through as urgent since I have history, but no. Any thoughts? Should I go back and see GP? Thanks for your time, I needed to rant!

  • Hello Happybread3

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some concerns about your breast health and that after seeig your GP, you've been told by the hospuital that there is a lengthy wait for routine appointments with the specialist. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

Do make another appointment to discuss your concerns with your GP. If they feel that you should be seen more urgently they can always get back in touch with the hospital to discuss the referral.

In the meantime, if it would help to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I hope you can get some reassurance soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Happybread,  I would definitely get back in touch with your GP as I would also think that this is a urgent referral.  40 weeks is way too long.  Good luck.
