Microscopic blood in urine failed cystoscopy

Hi everyone

i have become a nervous wreck over the past few months after the gp discovered i have microscopic blood in my urine, a referral was done to urology and since I have had bloods, acr urine tests that have both come back normal.

i was referred to urology and they ordered a kidney and bladder ultrasound scan and a cystoscopy.

today i have been for the cystoscopy and the urologist failed to be able to get the camera through my urethra so has suggested I have it done under a general which is booked for a months time, I also had the ultrasound scan which they said they could not see anything on.

i had urine cytology and the results are as follows:

This urine sample contains reactive urothelial cells, squamous

cells and occasional inflammatory cells. There are no papillary

groups no malignant cells seen in this sample.

I feel slightly reassured but not fully as I couldn’t obviously have the cystoscopy done today and now have another months wait but from my urine sample indicates inflammation but I’m unsure of the cause or what this means as I’m not testing positive for an infection and it’s sending me crazy I am so worried I can’t cope with daily life at the moment. Is there anyone that’s been in a similar position me that can shed any light I would be truly grateful.

thank you for reading

  • I sent though very similar and absolutely nothing was found, this was 6 years ago. x

  • Did you have inflammation of the bladder? The urine cytology results show inflammation in really scared and to be put under especially as they couldn’t even get the Camera through I’m scared the rigid one will cause me some damage :(

  • yeah, the reactive cells are likely caused from irritation or chronic infection that isn't symptomatic.

    how old are you ?

  • I have had many urine tests in the past 2 months all test positive for microscopic blood but no infection I’m 37 x

  • I'm surprised they would even suggest cancer.

Under 50 with microscopic haematuria is almost always benign.

Take a look at Dr Ronald Loo , article is called haematuria risk index score, , he did so much research into this and I spent hours and hours myself researching it.

  • hi lovely,

i completely understand how you feel. i've had multiple utis with constant microscopic haematuria for months now. they initially put me on meds for it whilst awaiting a routine cystoscopy that had to be delayed for ages due to other surgeries (i was meant to have it in march!!).

i had an episode of massive visible bleeding the other day after a further 3 infections. they couldn't perform the cystoscopy under local as i also have a rare urethral stricture and the amount of blood blocked the camera. i've got to have it under general anaesthetic in 2 weeks. they made me have a ct urogram last week which i'm waiting for the results for.

it sounds like your team are being really thorough, which is positive. keep advocating for yourself and continue being as brave as you are! it's a really scary time and you're handling it so well despite it all x
