Suspicious Skin Lesion

Hi,

I recently had a suspicious skin lesion removed from my arm. It started as a small pinkish sun spot which I had for many years with no problems. In July this year, it started to bleed slightly, then scabbed over. The scab fell off, then another scab grew.

Dermatology removed the lesion and surrounding margins recently.

I have not had any results back yet, this was only done 4 days ago.

It has been very worrying, and the waiting is awful...

  • Hi DJ

The waiting is the worst aspect in all this, more so than the actual treatments. The results can take 2 to 6 weeks to be reported depending on which hospital you attend and how busy the labs are. Meanwhile get on with living and enjoying your normal life the odds are stacked in your favour of clear margins.

  • Thank you for your reply, I'm having good days and bad days... today is a bad day as I'm starting to think about what if!....

The surgical procedure was awful, I'm a wuss!... my arm is still sore, and the thought of them having to go in again horrifies me!...

Its nice to know there are others out there who understand...

My family and work have been supportive, but it's OK for them to say don't worry!...

    Thank you for replying...

  • Hi DJC59, just wondering if you’ve had your results yet. I have a place similar to your scabby patch, but on my left outer eyelid under my eyebrow. I’m waiting for an initial screening appointment at a London skin cancer clinic, but the consultant who referred me there (long story why I saw him BEFORE attend screening clinic) said it’s definitely bcc. I’ve got a few other little bumps on my face that are suspicious. You said the procedure was awful … in what way? I am not wanting to scare myself, but I like to be armed with information.

  • Hi, I haven't received my results yet... I have been waiting nearly 4 weeks now (I was on a 2 week pathway).

The procedure was done under local, and cut out along with margins , then stitched and was uncomfortable... I'm not sure how they would do it on your eye area... my mum had a one on her face, and they froze it... then she was given cream...

I hope it goes ok for you... its a worry isn't it.. and the waiting for results and the not knowing!...

    Good luck...

  • Thanks for your reply DJC59. I’m sorry the surgery was uncomfortable for you. I hope they give me a lot of local, I don’t want to flinch while they’re cutting near my eye

Great that your mother was able to avoid surgery, I assume they use the freezing only for certain types or stages.

I hope you hear back with results this week. How do you reckon it’s healing, does it look ok?

  • Hi,

Do you know they are going to cut it out?... they can do MOHS... which is scraping off layers!...

Once they numbed the area, I couldn't feel anything other than pulling.... but its the thought of it isn't it...

The scar has sealed, but was weeping a little... had to see GP as thought it may have been infected.

My sister has dressed it and kept any eye on it... I currently have honey strips on it... then going to use bio oil... its just in an awkspot spot as can't lay on one side at the moment.

Just dreading if results come back and have to have more surgery...

I wish you all the best, let me know how you get on...

  • Hi DJC, lucky you to have a kind (and nearby) sister to help you dress the surgical wound. The honey strips sound interesting, hadn’t heard of those. I know honey is meant to be anti-microbial.

Re Mohs : yes in theory that’s how they’ll treat the main bcc on my eyelid, that’s what the consultant I saw last month advised. And hopefully the same for a suspicious nodule just above it, on the end of my eyebrow, that might be bcc. I’ve got a few other quite small bumps which might or might not be bcc, maybe they’ll want to just excise them and send to pathology, I’ll see what they say on Friday.

Meanwhile I hope you get good news and no further surgery is needed, fingers crossed! Please let us know.
