Significant boney lesions found on hip and pelvis following MRI scan

I had an MRI scan for orthopaedic hip issues.  My consultant arranged a telephone call a few days later and has told me they have found significant boney lesions which they are very concerned about and have made an urgent referral for a CT scan and the MDT clinic for malignancy of unknown origin.

I am terrified of what this could potentially mean.  I know that until I have further tests nothing is definite but I’m struggling with my own thoughts.

Is there I timescale to any diagnosis?  I have my husbands support, we have decided not to tell other family members until we know more.

just needed a safe space to write this down.

  • Hi Dylansmum,

A warm welcome to our forum - this is indeed a safe space for you to come and share your story and I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have experienced something similar before.

I am sorry to hear you are going through such a terrifying time at the moment and this period of uncertainty can be so unsettling. As you say, nothing is definite at the moment and you will only get a full picture of what is going on once you have had all the tests. It is normal in situations like yours to struggle with your own thoughts and to be worried about these bony lesions after talking to the consultant. It's good that things are moving fast and that they have referred you for a CT scan and I hope that you won't have to wait too long to be seen.

I am not sure what the timeframe might be for the diagnosis but perhaps your medical team will be able to tell you more so you could perhaps ask them when you have a CT scan whether they know what the timeframe might be and it will also depend on whether you will need to have further tests. As mentioned on our page on the CT scan , you should be getting results from your CT scan within 1 to 2 weeks.

I am glad you have a supportive husband by your side - it can be so important during times like this to have his love and support and it's completely understandable that you don't want to tell other family members until you find out more. This waiting game is so difficult and it can be the most stressful time as many members of our community will know only too well and I thought I would share with you these helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I am keeping everything crossed - do keep us updated if you get a chance when you find out more.  I will now let others who have been through something similar come and say hello and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you Lucie, I am trying to keep myself busy, I’m glad I have found this site

  • Hi Dylansmum.  so sorry to hear about the bony lesions.  I had MRI for hip and back pain where they found sclerotic bone lesions.  The doctor referred me to the 2 week pathway and her first request was rejected as I hadn't had a chest X ray.  She referred me again once I had the Xray.   She did lodge a complaint to the hospital as I had breast cancer 12 years ago.   I think it took actually closer to 4 weeks to get appointment with the hospital.  I know that the waiting is the worst time ever and I was constantly checking my phone and NHS app.  It took so long for the treatment/process to get going.  I know it is so hard to keep busy when your mind is in overdrive. This is a good place to share and I have found these forums very beneficial for me as we are all in the same boat.  Take care and happy to chat .  Big hugs.

  • Thank you Leelaloo

sorry to hear of what you’ve been going through.  I know I’m not alone in this and at least the process has started.  I am very lucky my orthopaedic consultant is amazing and has said he will chase it if I haven’t heard anything within the week of him referring.

I too keep checking the NHS app although they have said it is likely to be a telephone call, I’m lucky in that ive just taken early retirement and can get anywhere pretty quickly although it also means I have more time to think, keeping busy with my horses and dogs as always plenty to do.

I appreciate your time taken to reply

  • Hi D,  I also had to take ill health retirement from work, I worked in DWP for 21 years.  I really hope you hear something this week.  I used to have a horse and loved riding.  I have four dogs now which certainly keep me busy.  They keep me going with our daily walks in the woods.  Please let me know how you are getting on. Big hugs.
