Increased uterus/womb size a red flag for post-menopausal woman

Hi all

after suffering abdominal bloating and increasing pelvic pain over about 4 weeks, I saw the Dr., had blood tests and an ultrasound. The latter is being repeated as my bladder wasn’t full enough (it was a very hot day ). I have been worried by the fact that this time they have asked me to fast (and be sure to drink enough water of course) and pressed me to have a TVS which I physically can’t due to a congenital abnormality.  I assume this means they think they have (on review) seen something which the initial report which was normal in so far as it went, didn’t spot.  It gets worse though. In reviewing and comparing the recent report to one last year, I noticed my uterus has increased in size by dimensions of approx 9x3x4 yet I am a good 12 years post menopause. Surely this is a red flag?

i wondered if anyone else has hd experience of having to fast for an abdo/pelvic ultrasound and the context for this and also if anyone has experienced an increase in uterus size post menopause and what it was diagnosed as being due to.

i have previously had bladder cancer albeit early stage, low grade so I am a bit of a worry-guts.

best wishes to all here.

  • I'm sorry to hear about your symptoms Blue and for the worry they, and the increase in the size of your uterus, is causing.

I know this must be an extremely stressful time, especially having had bladder cancer before, but hopefully the ultrasound you're due to have again will finally be able to give you some answers and much needed peace of mind.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in a similar position will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice but if it would help to talk things through with one of our cancer nurses whilst you wait, you can do so on 0808 800 4040. Their phone lines are open Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m and they will do all they can to answer your questions and support you at this anxious time.

Do let us know how your ultrasound goes Blue. We'll be thinking of you and will have our fingers crossed for good news.

    All the best,

  • Thanks Steph.

I got the repeat TAS yesterday and they did both pelvis and abdomen.  The lady doing the scan didn’t indicate she had found any abnormality which was a relief and surprise as my symptoms continue.  I haven’t seen the report yet but can hopefully access that later via the NHS app once my surgery has reviewed it.  She did dictate measurements for her assistant and if I heard correctly, these were more in line with previous scans.  I also felt more confidence in her in general - unrushed, thorough and more empathetic - so perhaps the first scan can be discounted.

it does still leave me with my symptoms of persistent bloating and increasingly albeit not severe pain. I guess I will need to tell the doctor this and see  what else they suggest.

    Thank you again.
