First neck lumps check today

Have two neck lumps, both first noticed at different points early on in the year. One small, hard and fixed in the behind jaw/below ear area. This was tiny at first now about 3x the size. The other is deep neck/chin area, roughly inline with hyoid bone and about a fingers width across from it. This is about the size of a marble and hard but movable Have had consistent ear discomfort/fullness/tinnitus since January - all of these are on the right, same side as tonsil that's been almost twice the size of the other for over a year, possibly two. I'm 36, female, moderate smoker for over 20 years with a moderate risk for HPV

I booked today's appointment about five weeks ago as they're tricky to come by in our area lately. Called three weeks ago after a particularly bad night of whoosing tinnitus to ask if my appointment could be moved up. I managed to get a 5 minute phonecall appointment for the same day. Was told to keep this one and book in for bloods. At the end of the call I asked if there's any chance it could just be an infection and was prescribed antibiotics. No change during or after completing the course. Most blood results within normal bar low folate (2) and borderline low b12 (201) so at least that explains the recent exhaustion (sometimes even falling asleep on ADHD stimulants) and feeling low and anxious which is very out of character for me for several years now.

You know 'that feeling' of kind of feeling resigned to impending bad news.  appointment isn't until afternoon, I'm trying to find the feeling of doing something without being around others who may notice my fretting as I don't want to worry anyone.

So what are your tips and tricks for the day of (and day before) appointments/results days, please?

I hope today will be kind to you all.

  • Hi Link-Navi,

What a stressful time it must be for you but it is reassuring most blood results were normal except for low folate and borderline low B12. Have you had your appointment since? It's difficult sometimes to shake that feeling of expecting impending bad news but it's important to try if you can not to anticipate what it might be and to keep well away from the temptation to look things up on Google as this will only make you feel more anxious without giving you any satisfactory answers. I thought I would also share with you our helpful tips to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that you will hear from other members of our community who have been in a similar place before and that it all turns out to be nothing of concern. It will be good though for you to get some clarity on this very soon so that you find out exactly what is going on.

Keeping everything tightly crossed for you!

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for the tips, Lucie.

Appointment was with new Dr at the surgery and didn't go 'well' I froze up and forgot half the stuff I meant to say, didn't get my phone out to use the list I'd made either. Oops...

I didn't have a full examination, though she did feel the lump under my ear, agreed it's hard and fixed then went to look in my ear, the otoscope was unexpectedly painful so she stopped, said ear infection and gave me a prescription for an ear spray. Wouldn't examine my mouth as she's not a dentist but (we don't have a dentist, currently) I was in there maybe 5 minutes after booking the appointment 5 weeks ago and a few months of dithering worried id feel a nuisance taking up an appointment over nothing. I'm hopeful that the pain from otoscope is a good sign though and could mean there's a possibility it may just be a 5 month long infection. Currently on day three of the spray, no improvement so far. I'll go down for an emergency appointment with a physical list in my hand on Monday if there's still no improvement.

All three of my closest friends have died in the last two years, two from cancers found too late. Life is so surreal without their talking through and cheerleading for this and life in general.
