Lumpectomy just over a week ago

Hi i have recently had a lumpectomy. I was adamant it was a cyst as always suffered with cysts and had them drained. This time the consultant said it was a cyst but the radiographer on ultrasound said it was a mass so this really was a shock. The next minute we were in a room talking to the McMillan Nurse, who was amazing. I have just been so low about everything and awaiting results from lumpectomy. This has changed my whole perspective about working as a Nursing Associate as I recently qualified. Then I moved house and job and then my mum, who was my best friend  passed away. Just feel I can't return to my current role, but another lady at my work had a similar procedure and she was back at work within 4 weeks.

I am trying to stay positive but I just feel worried about the next steps.

Just can't talk to people in my family. Thank you..

  • Oh goodness you’ve been through it haven’t you. Sounds very similar to me, whole saga been going on for three years with cysts, lumps, abscesses etc. I’ve had three biopsies, all benign but surgeon wanted this abscess out which turned out to be a lump so awaiting results on that. The lumpectomy itself was fine but feeling absolutely exhausted since the operation three days ago. I’m taking all the time I need to recover and off work now for 2 weeks.

These last 5 months have been absolutely horrific. I’ve lost both my grandparents, a friend passed away and my son is now disabled. I can’t imagine what it’s like losing your mum, especially at a time like this so please do look after yourself and take all the time you need to recover. I know for me it’s the mental exhaustion as well as the physical. Be very kind and gentle to yourself. The very best of luck with your journey x

    1. Awaiting results is just the worst thing!  It should feel easier after that. Trying to distract yourself can be a good thing, you could think about medication and /or try contacting the nurse you found so helpful
    2. You mentioned another person at work who seems to have returned to work relatively early. I wouldn't compare herself to you - her circumstances may be quite different to yours and something else you find easy she might find really difficult.

    Good luck!

  • Oh my  I am so sorry you have had some awful times. I had my op on the 16th. Had a drain and Pico dressing. Able to do alot more now. Got my results Friday. Fingers crossed everything ok. It is more the mental exhaustion and painful if I do too much.

Lots of luck and hugs for your recovery.

  • Oh thank you so much for your kind reply. I think when I know if there is anything else to be done or if I just have to have radiotherapy then it will feel lighter.

    Best wishes.
