Thyroid Nodule

Hi all,

I'm 38 and I've been with issues in my troath after a flare up from my gastritis related with heavy stress and it has been a battle to manage it, but it seems this time it started affecting my troath thing that it never did before, but I know my stomach valve doesn't close properly since years. I've been almost the last two months trying to manage this and it has been really difficult, so much that already lost almost 4kg since January due to dietary changes (simply had to close my mouth) and stopped eating virtually everything and I'm eating small quantities. The GPs say the troath being affected is due to GERD but still they passed me to an E.N.T that I'm going to see in two weeks.

While I'm waiting for the appointment I decided to go and paid from my own pocket and did an ultrasound to the neck and thyroid that detected this:

"There is a hypoechoic, heterogeneous right thyroid lobe lesion with microcalcifications, measuring 8x5x6 mm. Associated vascularity is demonstrated.

Urgent specialist referral is suggested for further imaging investigations/FNA."

Now, from my research there's a high chance this is a bad thing due to the micro calcifications but there's also a chance this is benign. I know even if it's bad the thyroid cancer is one of the cancers that is more "easily" treated and the nodule is quite small, but still I'm worried with this.

The ultrasound also said the lymph nodes are all clear, being promising. I don't have any symptoms except the gastric reflux that I'm having difficulties to handle.

I know a person shouldn't worry, but it's only part of human nature isn't it? Worrying puts the people near us even more worried and their health also suffers. So I'm venting with everyone.

Thank you all

  • It's only natural to worry. Nobody wants any form of cancer, even if it's "only" a comparatively mild form.

I will say I had thyroid cancer 5 years ago. My nodule was 10.5cm (yes, cm, not mm) and of that, 6.7cm or 67mm was cancerous.

I had my thryroid removed and was back at work within a month. I did have radioiodine treatment afterwards to reduce the risk of recurrence, but that was really just taking a capsule.

  • Thank you very much Margaret for your reply. Indeed a person gets extremely worried.

My nodule is still micro and I'm going to see an E.N.T in less than two weeks, hopefully he will be able to determine everything.

  • Hi Maas,

I am in a really similar position to you, and I am getting ridiculed by the doctors. Same size nodule, same description of nodule, sore throats daily, neck pain around nodule, ear pain, tachycardia and a really decreased diet.
I was just wondering what the outcome of your thyroid nodule FNA/investigations were please?

    Sending you best wishes x

    Hi KAGD,

sorry to hear what you’re passing.

Giving more info about my nodule, the nodule in my case was not really the reason for the pain in the troath, nor in the neck, what was causing that was vocal straining after being investigated. The founding of the nodule was really purely incidental

The nodule after investigations had to be removed, and it was shown to be a 5mm Minimal Invasive Folicular Thyroid Carcimoma. I was lucky because it was catched really early with no vascular invasion. My Dr said in over 30 years. Of his career he never saw an FTC so small.

at this moment have half of the thyroid still and the dr said is not worried at all.

I was really fortunate thing is this kind of cancer appears in Ultra Sounds looking like a benign anedoma, mine in my case was a chameleon, it looked like a Papilay Carcinoma, because it grew inside a benign nodule the reaction of the cancer with the nodule it seems it created reactions making it look like a papillary.

one thing is I didn’t go via the NHS and did everything via private insurance. Going to the NHS was being complicated so just went private.

i was extremely lucky but fortunately Im doing really well.

i really hope they soon look into it, don’t let it pass push them
