adjuvant radiotherapy after hysterectomy

I was diagnosed back in July with Stage 1 Grade II endometrial adenocarcinoma and have recovered well

after a total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy on Sept 25th.  Due to lympho-vascular space

invasion I have been recommended to have adjuvant radiotherapy for 25 days due to start in 2 weeks.  I have

still not had my POLE results from the original biopsy four months ago, despite much chasing, which could

mean I do not need this treatment.  Is there anyone who has had this who can tell me of their experience as

the possible side effects almost put me off wanting to have it.

  • Hello Kayem66

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently been through surgery for endometrial adenocarcinoma. It's good to know that you're recovering well from the surgery.

Have the hospital team given you any information about why you're still waiting for this particular set of test results? I can understand your frustration at not having all the results available to help make the decision about treatment particularly when you have concerns about possible side effects.

Hopefully, some of our members who have been through this form of radiotherapy will post to share their experiences with you but in the meantime, if you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information and support they can.

I do hope that you get the answers, support and reassurance you need Kayem66 and whatever decision you make about this next stage of treatment, I wish you well with your recovery.

  • I had a hysterectomy 4 weeks ago and had an appointment this week at the cancer hospital. I had stage 1a grade 1 endometrial cancer and they have arranged for 5 weeks of radiotherapy. My planning appointment is today. I don’t have the Pole gene and even though it was caught early I am not looking forward to the treatment but if it helps to stop any reoccurrence I will grin and bear it. If they have recommended radiotherapy it might be that you don’t have the Pole gene, can you ask them to clarify that is the case?

  • I'm going to go ahead even without the POLE gene result (which seems to have gone astray, but the chances I will have it are slim)

I have heard varying second hand accounts of the treatment's side effects but as everyone responds differently will just have to take

my chances. Like you I'm not looking forward to it.  Good luck with your radiotherapy.
