I am a struggling to get my referral, even though my GP said I would be sent for tests

Ok so, I'm 30 and female. Back in April 24 I booked an appointment at my GP to check a lump which had appeared on my right breast, there was a 6 week wait for an appointment. On 31st May 24, I had my appointment, the doctor looked at my breast, didn't touch, and said I would be referred and it could be weeks or months. He didn't know. 1 month passes and we're now at the end of June, my lump is now starting to change, it's slightly bigger and is rough to the touch. I checked my NHS app and it had no details of a referral. So I called the GP and the receptionist confirmed I should have had the referral, however to chase this up I needed an appointment with the GP again, so I booked one in 2 weeks time which was the closest date, but this was over the phone.

When I had my phone call, it was a different GP who called, he said he can't do anything as he hadn't seen me. I asked for a face to face appointment, his reply was "I don't do the receptionists job". Later on that week I received a text saying my referral request was sent by reception and to expect to receive a date.

To this day, I still have no referral date on my NHS app, nor am I listed on the waiting list.

I'm just lost, I don't know how else to get this request through. I'm so close to going private, but I don't have the money so that would mean falling short on another bill. Is there anything else I can do? Anyone I can speak to?

To top this off, last week I lost a friend to cancer at the age of 34, who's symptoms were missed by a GP until it was too late. I also have family history with breast cancer, my grandma and my cousin have both had and got through this with treatment.

I appreciate any help or advice you could give. Thanks

  • You need to be clear about all this. Not saying you haven't, but you're needing to condense this into your telephone consultation with the receptionist.  "I've had a lump for months now, that has grown bigger, and you want to see a GP not in 2 weeks, but today or tomorrow"

When you see the GP demand to get put onto the 2 week cancer pathway. Not laying the blame at your feet at all, because some surgeries are just awful. But sometimes in life you have to be an advocate for your own health. Time to get pushy with them. Not rude, but pushy. Emphasise the fact you have had a lump for months now, and it has gotten bigger. Your treatment from your surgery goes against all the national recommended guidelines for suspected cancer. You shouldn't need to go private. If the worst comes to the worst, even seeing a nurse rather than a GP is an idea. My wife seen a nurse, she got a gp in the room, and she got her cancer pathway referral there and then. It doesn't need to be a gp. But demand to see someone because the chances are, it's absolutely nothing. But if it is something, the longer you leave it, the harsher the treatment.
