Stage 0 skin cancer is also called in situ melanoma. Stage 0 is the 'best of a bad bunch' when it comes to melanoma as it's been caught early and is contained in the upper layer of skin therefore it can't spread internally.

Melanoma can occur on areas of the body that aren't exposed to the sun - most of these aren't caused by UV damage but are genetic - about 20% of melanomas are genetic. Do you have anyone in your close family that has been diagnosed with melanoma?

Your GP is quite right to refer you to dermatology as they are the experts. Unless they are pretty sure your lesion is a benign condition, they will probably arrange for it to be removed for a biopsy - the results will then give you a diagnosis. There is still a chance it isn't melanoma so try not to worry too much until you see the dermatologist. If it turns out to be Stage 0 melanoma it will be successfully treated by surgery.
