GP Thinks I have stage 0 Skin Cancer?

So I've had a scaly red mark on my leg for 6 weeks now. Last week I went to the GP with it and she said worse case scenario, it's a pre skin cancer or stage 0 skin cancer. She reffered me for a 2 week appt with the dermatologist at the hospital. I'm waiting on that appt coming in but my head is running away with me, I'm terrified it's actually an amelanotic melonoma or something much more serious. The strange this is, I'm only 45 and the mark is on an area I don't get any sun on, is this possible? Could the GP be wrong and I actually have melonoma?

  • Hi,

Stage 0 skin cancer is also called in situ melanoma. Stage 0 is the 'best of a bad bunch' when it comes to melanoma as it's been caught early and is contained in the upper layer of skin therefore it can't spread internally.

Melanoma can occur on areas of the body that aren't exposed to the sun - most of these aren't caused by UV damage but are genetic - about 20% of melanomas are genetic. Do you have anyone in your close family that has been diagnosed with melanoma?

Your GP is quite right to refer you to dermatology as they are the experts. Unless they are pretty sure your lesion is a benign condition, they will probably arrange for it to be removed for a biopsy - the results will then give you a diagnosis. There is still a chance it isn't melanoma so try not to worry too much until you see the dermatologist. If it turns out to be Stage 0 melanoma it will be successfully treated by surgery. Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)

  • Thanks for that. I should say that the GP thought it was stage 0 Squamous Cell or Bowens disease which I've read is stage 0 SCC ,she said she didn't think it was full blown BCC or SCC, she didn't mention melanoma at all. Its just my fear that I go to the dermatologist and they say it's actually melanoma but it doesn't look like the typical melanoma, it looks very similar to SCC. I guess my mind is running away with me!

  • Thanks for explaining that - I'm not an expert on Bowens, SCC and BCC other than my dad & sister-in-law have had several Bccs. Hopefully it's been caught quickly & your treatment will be successful. Good luck.
