Prostate Cancer - PI-RAD 4-5 but negative biopsy. Could I have cancer?

I recently had a PSA test that resulted in a value of 8. Consequently, this was followed by an MRI, giving a PI-RADS score of 4-5. I then had a biopsy, but was surprised to hear that the results were negative. I would like to know how common this is. Should I be worried that the biopsy missed something?

I've been told to have the PSA rechecked periodically, and to have more tests if it reaches 12. But how long should I wait?

  • Hello DaveKF and welcome to the forum, It looks to me that they have put you on active surveillance, a PI-RADS 4-5 with a PSA of 8 would suggest there is something there, but by no means is it certain, and if there were, it has been caught very early, as your biopsy being negative would appear to confirm, a negative biopsy can happen it depends on how many core's are taken, the nature of any, if any, cancer and where about in the prostate any cancer cells may be. I would suggest if there is any cancer in your prostate it is so small that it would be difficult to get a biopsy sample from it. Having your PSA checked every 3 months will spot any change in plenty of time, take care.

  • Thanks Eddi. It's what I was thinking, but didn't know how often I needed a PSA check. When I asked a GP, he said he didn't know enough!

    Sums up the NHS.

  • Your welcome, your hospital may say 6 monthly tests are enough, that's what my oncologist suggested for me, but my GP was happy to give me a 3 monthly tests when I asked her
