Post Menopausal Bleeding

I am 65 and had an early menopause at about 45. I have had 3 episodes of some post menopausal bleeding over the last 2 months. It’s been very light, and just been a one off thing each time. I have a cervical smear test booked for the week after next . I’m wondering if I should chat to my GP before that though? Also I feel bloated, but I’m not sure if that’s just psychological!

  • Hi, I am in a similar situation, age 56,  GP concerned with bleeding since changes to HRT ( to progesterone only from combined patches),after almost a year of no period.Had Ultrasound scan Tuesday, shows thickened lining, now awaiting urgent Gynae appointment within next few weeks.Am obviously worried about outcomes but also glad that it's all being dealt with quickly, it's all a bit overwhelming tbh.

  • My story is identical to yours. I should have had my hysteroscopy on 29th but my anxiety was through the roof so consultant asked me if I preferred general aesthetic. I jumped at the chance. Now I am waiting for a pre op appt and a telephone call for appt to have the hysteroscopy and biopsy done. It’s very overwhelming but reassuring that things are happening quickly.

  • Hi , I have my appointment through for 23rd July, it's the waiting that's the worst.I am due to go on a cruise first week of September, so hoping for the best outcome.Got to try and keep positive.I am also a bank nurse after retiring from full time last year and have managed to get an extension to my revalidation until mid September as obviously if it's Cancer then won't bother with it and concentrate on my health.

hope all goes well with you , and everyone else in same boat , it helps to chat with you all , doesn't feel so lonely.

  • Yes I’m supposed to be going on holiday the weekend of 20th July. Husband is all for us losing the whole pay,ent if I need to have any treatment then but I really want my holiday lol. It really does help knowing that I am not alone. It’s so scary not knowing and the waiting has me worried incase things progress if it is endometrial cancer. I can’t sleep as I’m up and down to the toilet every 1 to 2 hours and I have constant back ache with bloated stomach. Would love for it all to be over and a positive outcome for us all.

  • I’vs got an internal scan tomorrow and then see a consultant afterwards .I’m getting more and more worried the nearer it gets! Am dreading that they say I need a hysteroscopy, as I’ve heard they can be very painful. Hugs to everyone going through all this!! Xx

  • I too was a ball of n iety about the hysteroscopy but my consultant gave me the option of having a general anaesthetic so don’t get worried. Just ask them. My consultant said I won’t have to wait for a new appt as it’s still under 2ww and asked if I would be ok if the called within 2 to 3 days. Chins up girls. We got this :) hugs

  • Just had to complete an online pre op assessment and been notified my day surgery for hysteroscopy will be on 16th July. Timing is good for our holiday which is booked for 20th July. Can’t believe how fast this is all going.

  • Good to know that a hysteroscopy is day surgery. I hope all goes well and that you will be celebrating good news on your holiday!

Were you offered just sedation as an alternative to a full anaesthetic?

  • Due to my heightened anxiety the consultant mentioned GA and I said yes! Yes please!. I didn’t give the poor man the chance to offer anything else. I just want to sleep and deal with whatever when I wake up. I had sedation when I had a laparoscopy when I had an ulcer and I can still remember the yucky bits of that so GA is better option for me.

  • Hi I had to have my Hysteroscopy done under general anesthetic because the pain was so intense when they tried to do it before. I just had it done Friday 12th july. It all went very well & I'm recovering at home. Just got to wait for the results of the biopsies now. The waiting is very hard. Like you said, it's a very overwhelming time, and I am struggling with it. But rest assured, you will be fine having it done. Thinking of you x

  • Abbie52 did they give you any feedback at all after your hysteroscopy? Hope you continue to rest and recover well.

  • No feedback really. I asked if any polyps had been removed because from the internal scan they thought polyps were present. But i was told that during the Hysteroscopy they didn't find polyps. Apart from that I was told results would be 2-3wks. X

  • Hi, my hysteroscopy and D&C was on June 28 and I’ve still not had any news. To be honest, I’m on holiday anyway and have taken the gung-ho attitude of “what the heck” whilst I wait. How long is too long before I start to bother someone in a lab somewhere?

Here’s hoping we all get good news.

  • All done. The hysteroscopy/biopsy was fine- no worse than a smear test. I didn’t need any pain relief other than the paracetamol and ibuprofen that I was advised to take 1 hour before.
There is thickening of the lining of my uterus on one side. Initially before the procedure, she thought it could be because of the polyp (which she removed anyway for biopsy,) but could be the sign of abnormal cells/ cancer. If she thought it was just caused by the polyp she would have fitted a coil to thin the lining , but she didn’t end up doing that. Having done the hysteroscopy, she has requested an MRI scan for more investigations. She said that they have a very low threshold for offering a hysterectomy- even if there are only slight changes to the cells and she thinks that’s what I will be offered. From what I have read, the MRI is offered to ascertain if any cancer has spread/ to get an idea of what stage it might be at. I’m suspecting that they will find some cancer ( I was also sort of warned this by the consultant I saw 2 weeks ago,) although she said they won’t know for sure until they get the biopsy back. If it’s cancer and early stages, a hysterectomy would hopefully get rid of it all. Glad this bit is over, but not out of the woods yet. Xx

  • That's good that it wasn't painful.Must admit after a couple of attempts by GP/nurse  in the past to insert a coil, I ended up going to FP clinic to get it done with local anaesthetic and it was still sore , so dreading the hysteroscopy.

Hopefully you don't have too long before you know results, it's all the waiting and not knowing that makes our minds go in to overdrive .

  • That’s sounds good! I’m hoping for early stages and hysterectomy… we have to hold onto hope!

  • Glad it went ok and wasn’t too painful. I do hope the biopsy is ok and the MRI can offer assurance xx

  • Well my turn today for my hysteroscopy. I’m not so much worried about the procedure knowing I’m under GA but the not knowing what they might find is worrying me. I’ll sleep for England after this is over. Fingers crossed for a good outcome for us all xx I’ve got to be at the hospital for 7.30am this morning but have no idea what time I go to theatre so been nil by mouth since midnight. I’ve been wide awake since around 2am. Anyway! Will let you all know when I know something

  • Best of luck. Hope all goes well and you get some reassurance x
