Ovarian cancer scare

I'm on the cancer pathway. I had originally been referred as I felt a lump where I thought my ovary was. An ultrasound scan showed a complex mass that wasn't clear if it was a cyst or not - my GP said the report referenced it looking like a bunch of grapes.

My CA 125 was about 100 when it was tested.

I saw the consultant today and he said he didn't think it was cancer. He felt my abdomen and felt internally. He said the lump I felt wasn't the cyst but a lymph node but said this is nothing to worry about. The lump is about 2cm across and hard. He is referring me for am MRI and said this can tell if the cyst is cancer without needing a biopsy.

I felt relieved about what he said but also something has made me feel unsure about what he was saying. Is it usual to have hard lymph nodes with a cyst? And will an MRI be able to diagnose what the mass is alone?

  • Hello Kelo

I'm sorry to hear that you've had some health concerns recently and that following your appointment with the specialist you're now waiting for further tests. It's positive to hear that your appointments to date haven't given any immediate cause for concern but it's understandable that you're still feeling anxious about things.

It's not uncommon for additional scans and tests to be requested following an initial finding. This often gives the specialists access to more information to help them make a full diagnosis of the problem but we do know that waiting for tests can be a worrying time.

You may find it helpful to talk through some of your concerns with your GP or perhaps with one of our team of nurses. I know they will be happy to listen and offer any advice, information, and support they can. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040 (excluding bank holidays). I hope that you don't have to wait too long for the MRI scan and that the team can give you some reassurance about the results. Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
