Suspected Basal Cell Carcinoma back of hand

Hi, I haven’t been on here for a bit, hope everyone is doing well.  Recently seen the GP for a small pink lump on the back of my hand.  Wasn’t concerned initially but she had another look and thought it was sensible to have it biopsied as it could be an early BCC.  I’m pretty worried after my breast cancer diagnosis over 2 years ago now and I thought I was doing well.  This is quite triggering.  There is also a 3 month wait at my hospital to even see someone so that’s annoying.

Has anyone else had a BCC on the back of their hand and was it easily removed?  My skin is quite sun damaged and papery on the back of my hands, (only got myself to blame I suppose), so I’m worried it could spread more easily.   If it is cancer again I’ll be gutted.

Thanks.  Mary

  • Hello Mary,

You did well to flag this small pinkish lump on the back of your hand with the GP. It looks like your GP was very thorough and decided it would be sensible to have it biopsied just in case. I hope that you won't have to wait very long for your biopsy results. It's normal to be worried especially as you were diagnosed with breast cancer 2 years ago but this is likely to be unrelated and I am sure that they will be able to sort this effectively - whether it turns out to be BCC or not. I am sorry to hear that there is a 3 months wait to be seen at the hospital and I can sympathise with your frustration and I hope that you won't have to wait that long. While you are waiting, it might be helpful to read our useful tips to help you cope while waiting for news.

I hope that you will hear from others here who have had a BCC removed on the back of their hand and that they will share their experience with you. You can read more on our website on surgery for small skin cancers . Try not to worry too much though about it until you have had a full diagnosis and as you will read in our information on Basal Cell Carcinoma "it's very rare for basal cell skin cancer to spread to another part of the body to form a secondary cancer."

Keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be fine and that this little lump on the back of your hand turns out to be nothing concerning and that it can be easily removed if need be.

    Best wishes,
