Failed colonoscopy and CT scan

Good morning all.

On Friday I had a failed Colonoscopy, due to pain they had to abort it, it was the most painful thing I have ever done and had two children with no pain relief. The consultant doing the scan seemed exasperated at not being about to complete the scan and no matter what position I was in he couldn't get through but put the paperwork that it was aborted due to it being uncomfortable. He said he would refer me for a CT scan or the bowel and just walked out the room.

The nurses were great but feel like I have been left down badly. This is a 2ww appointment (cancelled once so currently 4 weeks from referral) no idea how long I will wait for CT scan.

Now super anxious thinking there was something blocking it getting through.

The nurse before had told me there was no nerve endings in the bowel so wouldn't feel a biopsy, so why did I find it so painful?

Sorry, I know no one can answer these questions really and read other people having similar experiences on here, but can't see many follow up posts about how they got on.

Has anyone got any words of encouragement, am loosing my mind here.

Thank you all and I wish everyone reading this the best outcomes on their journeys.

Jenny

  • Hi Jenny - I was worried about mine so I requested IV sedation and pain relief which they were very happy to give. Looks like you’ll have to wait for the CT now. Fingers crossed for you.

If there was something blocking it they would have seen it and told you on the day. This happened to me and sadly it was a large tumour in my sigmoid colon which they took biopsies of during the colonoscopy. The scope couldn’t get past it. They told me all this straight after - was a bit of a shock when I thought i just had IBS.

The waiting is dreadful to find out what is going on and sadly there isn’t anything we can do. I’ve just been through it myself, time moves on and it’ll come round.

  • Thanks so much Andrew. I hope you are well and treatment/removal went well.

That's reassuring to know thought that they would have said. I just felt like the consultant couldn't be bothered and was eager to get off.

Appreciate you taking the time to respond,  although I wish no one was in this situation it's also reassuring to know people have come through it and understand the anxiety of the wait.

    Best wishes to you.

  • I had sedation and would suggest that you see if it's an option.

A friend of mine also tried to have one without sedation but, as it became so uncomfortable, requested sedation and they gave it to her there and then and finished the colonoscopy.

We both had ours done privately. Not sure if the NHS works in the same way.

  • I had sedation when I had mine 2 weeks ago. Did absolutely nothing. I was in agony . The poor nurse's hand must have been bruised with me squeezing it. They said it was because I had a hysterectomy
