Family History - Cancer

I am 45, mum of 2.  My mum has had bowel cancer, sister had womb cancer, dad had bladder cancer - I lost both my uncles to bowel cancer.

Since having my children, piles has never played nicely with me.  Therefore, bleeding is normal at times from the rectum.  But I never know whether this is piles or something worse.

Because of my age, I keep being told that I cant get a Bowel screening test as I am not the right age.  Is this right?

Due to family history I wish to be checked.   My mum had no painful symptons for bowel cancer as she was only picked up through routine checks.

I have tried going onto Bowel Cancer UK and other cancer groups, but I cannot seem to get any assistance.  Its not a GP appointment I require at this stage, just wish to eliminate due to history.

  • Hello NervousMum123

I'm sorry to hear about the situation you find yourself in. It's understandable that you're feeling concerned about things.

As you're only 45, you wouldn't fall into the eligibility for the routine national bowel screening program.  However, you mention in your post that you have 3 family members who have been diagnosed with bowel cancer so it is possible that you may be eligible for genetic screening to see if early monitoring would be appropriate. You can read more about this on our website about screening for people at high risk as well as on the Bowel Cancer UK website. This is something you need to talk through with your GP so that they can refer you to the local genetics service if appropriate.

If you'd like to talk with one of our nurses for some advice and support you're welcome to call them on 0808 800 4040, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

I hope that you're able to find the reassurance your seeking.

    Best wishes,
