CT colonoscopy in two weeks time even though colonoscopy normal in Dec 2022?

Just wondering whether I should be concerned given that I have already had a normal colonoscopy (with biopsies) in December 2022 but since in February this year.

FIT result was 27 in October 2022 and was referred to colorectal. Had a colonoscopy in December 2022 with biopsies which were all normal.

Since I’ve had quite extreme weight loss (26 kg), increase blood in stools and still abdominal pain and change in bowel habits. Also very tired. My GP wrote to my colorectal consultant and she said I need to have a CT colonoscopy in two weeks time.

Just wondering why if my previous colonoscopy was normal? Does this not mean cancer is ruled out?

  • I had a negative FIT test in July 2022 and just over a year later they found a 5cm tumour

  • I'm no expert, obviously, but CT colonoscopies aren't just tests for cancer. I am guessing they want to find out what is going on. While it is unlikely (though I think it might be possible) that a colonoscopy would miss cancer (it's not at all like a negative FIT test which is only testing for blood in the stool, whereas a colonoscopy is the gold standard), I guess it is possible a polyp might have started developing or that something like diverticulitis or Crohns or ulcerative colitis could have developed in the meantime. I don't know much about any of those things but I assume it's likely that some of them could develop within a year.

Basically, they are trying to find the cause of your bowel problems, whatever that cause may be.

  • I had a colonoscopy 5 years ago and another because of some blood found in routine bowel screening last July. Both were clear, no polyps etc..Blood was ascribed to radiation colitis following ERT for prostate cancer.

Last 3 months erratic bowel movements led me to a private consultant and last Tuesday a CT colonography. While I sought this for other organs, consultant included colon in case colonoscopy(s) missed something, so playing safe  -  as MargaretMary says trying to find a cause. Seems sensible to me.

My results not passed to me as soon as had been promised, so I rather expect the worst, probably pancreatic cancer.

If possible I suggest you try and get the CT to include the abdomen, get it over with in one hit.

I can only wish you good luck.

    Dave.

I am so sorry. I guess we are used to relying on the gold standard tests to pick up everything but I have also heard that in some situations (although apparently rare), tumours can start to grow quickly and/or be missed. I hope you are ok.

Thank you so much Dave. You are right - I sought clarification and it is to look at all of the other abdominal organs too as I also have an ovarian mass which they aren’t sure what it is contained of. They are also double checking the bowel. I appreciate your message though and hope you are ok too.

  • You are right - they are checking for the other organs in the abdomen due to the worsening and new symptoms. Unintentional weight loss seems to be the main concern and I have an ovarian mass which they aren’t sure what it consists of. They are also double checking the bowel in case a small polyp or other conditions were missed/not active at the time of the colonoscopy. I hope you are ok and I appreciate your reply!

Thank you. My CT Scan confirmed that colonoscopy(s) had not missed anything and the abdominal stuff all OK except for some inflammation of the pancreas.

I hope your news will be equally good.

    Dave.
