Extremely painful colonoscopy no sedation

Wanted to share my experience of colonoscopy i had tried both sedation and without, with sedation was abandoned due to my extreme pain which i don't recall except for one moment during procedure.

Second time to avoid same i chosen no sedation and i must say it was the most painful experience in my life.Maybe it is because i am petite female or maybe my colon is really narrow bit i can't believe i had to go through so much pain while some other people say it didn't hurt at all.For me going around bends felt like my colon beeing twisted in knot and at one point tube hit my left kidney and it hurt really bad.I was holding bed railing with all my strength and screamed so much i am just grateful doctor continued anyway as i just wanted to get it over with.I must say doctor manoeuvre and changing my body position when possible due to pain helped me a lot,as did their kind patience aswell. My suggestion is try with sedation and if it works dont risk experiencing what i did unless you have no choice. You will not know whether you are going to feel pain or not unless you are brave enough to find out, i had to but next time sedation for me as this pain made me feel like zombie for days i was under shock recollecting the pain i endured.Anyone not feeling pain during colonoscopy you are so lucky but unfortunately some of us have body constitution not made for this procedure,i am one of those people, hope this post helps you decide.

  • From previous researching into Colonoscopy procedures, I had read and only came across info of bloating, discomfort, cramping and mild pain in patients. So, you could imagine my surprise during my colonoscopy examination when I found myself rolling around, badly cramping up (pressing down firmly as much of my lower abdomen as possible) almost screaming at times, in excruciating pain!

I deliberately chose for several reasons not to be under sedation, so this I do not regret, and would opt again for no sedative.

I'm wondering if the intense pain caused is due to myself having a small frame (as an adult). This would be confirmed as a possibility to myself when the doctor conducting the examination acknowledged the amount of pain I was in cleverly decided to swap the adult endoscope tube used, to the childrens sized endoscope tube instead. It made a better difference! Still some discomfort and pain felt here and there, but this was only slight in comparison to the great discomfort felt before. Thanks to this doctor's actions, the whole examination was successfully done.

So to anyone who experiences intense pain during their colonoscopy examination, I highly reccomend you to forward this option to whomever is performing your procedure, and see if this works better for you.

    Hope this helps anyone.
