Extremely painful colonoscopy no sedation

Wanted to share my experience of colonoscopy i had tried both sedation and without, with sedation was abandoned due to my extreme pain which i don't recall except for one moment during procedure.

Second time to avoid same i chosen no sedation and i must say it was the most painful experience in my life.Maybe it is because i am petite female or maybe my colon is really narrow bit i can't believe i had to go through so much pain while some other people say it didn't hurt at all.For me going around bends felt like my colon beeing twisted in knot and at one point tube hit my left kidney and it hurt really bad.I was holding bed railing with all my strength and screamed so much i am just grateful doctor continued anyway as i just wanted to get it over with.I must say doctor manoeuvre and changing my body position when possible due to pain helped me a lot,as did their kind patience aswell. My suggestion is try with sedation and if it works dont risk experiencing what i did unless you have no choice. You will not know whether you are going to feel pain or not unless you are brave enough to find out, i had to but next time sedation for me as this pain made me feel like zombie for days i was under shock recollecting the pain i endured.Anyone not feeling pain during colonoscopy you are so lucky but unfortunately some of us have body constitution not made for this procedure,i am one of those people, hope this post helps you decide.

  • They gave me no sedation or anything for mine last week as I have high pressure in one eye and the drug they use raises eye pressure with risk of Glaucoma. I asked them not to use it.

It was excruciating, at one point I screamed, I was swearing and crying out and they abandoned it as couldnt even get round the first bend. I feel pretty sick to read the lies they come up with about 'a little discomfort'. I thought medical staff had a duty not to inflict pain on their patients. Frankly I'd rather die from cancer than go through that again.

  • I have glaucoma and I had sedation but didn't do anything as I felt everything and was in so much pain. They said it was because I had scarring due to a hysterectomy I had years ago

  • Oh dear, that’s not good.  That’s what worries me because I’ve had 3 caesarians and am bound to have lots of scar tissue in the area, adhesions etc.  After the last one 19 years ago the surgeon said my bladder was attached to my uterus so in all likelihood bowel too.  Your experience has reminded me and I didn’t mention any of this to the consultant last week when I saw him for initial meeting.  I think he said he uses Fentanyl.
