Possible symptoms of bowel/colon cancer

Hi all

I’m 39 and have had bowel changes since beginning of December. My movements are small pieces that are easy to pass, but gp said that this was constipation. I was sent for bloods (normal) and FIT which came back at 4. GP did rectal exam and noted nothing unusual. Said it could be a little bit of IBS and to monitor food to see if anything changes.

Fast forward 3 months and I’m still having same issue. I was under the impression that constipation was when you struggle to go but I don’t struggle. I eat a balanced diet and drink plenty of water but it’s hot and miss if I have a normal movement. I’ve maybe had 3 in the last 4 weeks. All the rest have been small pieces.

I’m seeing a Consultant about this tomorrow as I’m getting rather worried. I’m worried that something more sinister is going on and I’ve left it too long after the first GP visit.  I find that it’s taking over my life and I’m worrying every time I need the toilet. I don’t have any other symptoms but I thought I saw some blood this evening as the water was a pink colour.

I wondered if anyone had gone private and had tests done quicker than the normal 2WW.

  • To follow on, I’ve noticed yesterday and today I’ve had mucus/blood in stool too.

  • Thats what made me go to the doctors and eventually find out  i had colon cancer it was my only symptom , but your fit score seems ok mine was 168

  • Hi Gordgrc, what were your symptoms? I went private and saw a consultant last Wednesday but still haven’t heard anything. I feel this is getting worse so going to ring up my GP in the morning and maybe they’ll refer me for a colonoscopy. I know it’s not a nice procedure but would feel better if I had everything checked rather than just the sigmoidoscopy.

  • The only symptom i had was a small bit of mucus and small bit of blood, felt great no other symptoms it would have been so easy to put it off and wait and see , get a colonoscopy ASP like i said i had no symptoms and still never up until the time i had the operation, i had a 5 cm tumour which was found with the colonoscopy, they gave me a CT scan then 7 days later they removed it , i had 22 lymph nodes removed and two were found to be going cancerous so i will be having 3 months of chemo, i am five weeks from my operation now and slowly picking up my energy, get it sorted ASP as it will definitely get worse, but it might not be colon cancer, let’s hope so

  • Hey Gordgrc, I’m really sorry to hear about this and hope your operation went well.

I’m sorry for jumping on this but this sounds very similar to my dads case apart from they have also found an enlarged node on his pelvic wall, it has also spread to the lymph nodes that are close to his tumour.

I hope you don’t mind me asking and stop me if I’m asking too much. I was wondering if you went private for your treatment as my dad was diagnosed early February and still hasn’t started any treatment or had his operation even though they have said it’s stage 3 and moderately aggressive.

  • No NHS they were very quick 20 dec went to the GP , had a fit test , saw a consultation then had a colonoscopy then saw a surgeon then had a CT scan then an operation on 10 March super quick

  • Hiya,

sorry for jumping on here, but hoping you wouldn’t mind me asking a couple Q’s.

my sister is 31, and been having a lots of tests etc, stool sample x2, loads of blood tests. They basically told her a couple of weeks ago they have ruled out chrones and lots of other stuff, the only two things left was either IBD or cancer.

she had her colonoscopy today, they took 8 biopsies but didn’t really say much after (just that she will get results in 10 days?)

did they tell you immediately after your procedure, she is due to get married in 8 days

symptoms are blood/mucus in stool, weight loss, a lot of pain once eating etc.

    thanks so much,

worried sick! Was hoping for some answers today! And got nothing x
