Painful lump in breast

I went to the GP 4 months ago with a new breast lump. Although the lump could be felt, nothing showed up on the ultrasound and i was told it was ‘normal breast tissue’. I was confused by this as the lump was causing me pain.

A month later I asked for a 2nd opinion as the pain worsened. An ultrasound was carried out again, which this time showed a lymph node. I was told there was nothing to worry about as it didn’t look alarming.

Fast forward another month and the lump is constantly painful. I can feel another lump next to the lymph node and am really concerned. Should lymph nodes in breasts be painful foe prolonged periods of time? What could be causing this? If i go back to the GP I'm worried they won’t refer me as I have already been seen by the breast clinic. Equally, i am worried that something may have been missed at the previous ultrasound scan. I have heard that the scans aren’t always accurate.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I’m just not sure what to do next.

Thanks x

  • Hello HH30,

A big welcome to Cancer Chat. You did the right thing in going to see the GP when you noticed this lump and as this lump kept causing you pain despite not showing up on the ultrasound, it was a good idea to seek a second opinion. I am not sure myself if lymph nodes in breasts are painful for prolonged periods of time and what could be causing this but as you are in constant pain and do not feel reassured, there is no harm at all in going back to see the GP. I am sure that despite having been seen already at the breast clinic, the GP will take your concerns seriously and don't hesitate to let them know how you are feeling and that you are worried about ultrasound scans having missed something. I think for peace of mind, it is worth getting in touch with your GP and telling them how this pain has increased and is worrying you. You shouldn't have to put up with this pain in your breast so you could also ask them what the best way to deal with the pain is and whether there is anything they can do to help and to reassure you.

I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have had a similar experience and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • I'm currently experiencing a very similar thing and have just posted about it too. I have 2 or 3 supposed lumps in one breast but was told I just had thick breast tissue which is apparently normal for my age (18) . However, the ultrasound was excruciatingly painful and I quite simply don't understand how "normal" breast tissue can cause one so much pain. I also very much hfelt dismissed due to my age and I look about 13/14 and they told me this pain was normal for my age as I am still growing but I stopped growing around 3/4 years ago. I also didn't feel they provided much insight or support and I too was let quite confused.

I have read somewhere that thick brrast tissue can prevent lumps from being visible on mammograms which I suppose would be the case with ultrasounds too. I'm unsure if you have thick breast tissue but it could be a possibility. I'm currently questioning returning to my GP and I honestly suggest you do the same.

I hope you find answers and receive the best results xx

  • Go back to the doctors again until they listen. I had to go four times before I was listen to due to a pain in my breast and now I face grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma and start chemotherapy next week. From my first doctors visit to the last was 12 months. I was told I had tissue trauma due to being hit by a ball and it would heal ……it was breast cancer. I feel a year has been wasted.

You know your own body so go back to GP.
