Potential lung cancer diagnosis

Hi, my 81 year old mum has had a cough for a few months. She had antibiotics at Christmas and it cleared up . She had chest pains last eeek and the cough came back so I took her to an and e . They did bold tests and and X-ray initially. The X-ray was clear but the bloods had a marker for a clot so she was sent for a ct scan on her chest. An anomaly on both lungs showed up but the doctor thought it was an infection and gave her an antibiotic telling her to come back to get checked in 6 weeks. Today ( Wednesday) she has received a call from the secretary of the thoracic surgeon asking her to come in for an appointment next Thursday afternoon. They said to bring someone with her and to set aside a couple of hours. She didn't ask any other questions. She is otherwise a very heathy lady. We are all distraught wondering why she has been called in and are assuming the worst. I imagine a 2 hour appointment will involve more tests but I am worried what we may be told. I'm told the thoracic clinic only happens once a week hence the waiting time. I would be so grateful if anyone could help with any further information.. the waiting and not knowing is torture

thank you

  • Hello Roz and a warm welcome to our forum,

What a stressful time it has been for you and your mum for the last few months. I hope that you will find out more on Thursday when you have the appointment. It's hard to know why she has been called in and what will be discussed during this 2 hour appointment. It's normal to assume the worst but there could also be other lung conditions which could explain this long appointment - it's difficult to know really what it means and the only thing you can do really at the moment is be there for her and support her during this time of uncertainty. As you say, the waiting and not knowing can be so difficult and it's important to try and keep away from the temptation to look things up online as it will only make you feel more anxious and never gives satisfactory or reliable answers. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope while waiting for important news.

I hope that you will hear from the experiences of others on the forum who have followed a similar diagnosis process and that they will be along shortly to share their story with you. We'll be thinking of you in the coming days and I hope that your appointment on Thursday will shed some light on what is going on. Do come back here if you have a second and let us know what they have said on Thursday - we are keeping everything tightly crossed for you that it turns out to be nothing too concerning.

    Best wishes,
