Positive FIT test, feeling worried

Hi all,

I had the doctor phone me this evening to tell me that my FIT test result was more than 190 (positive is above 10). I have no symptoms apart from having had blood in my poo 2 weeks ago hence the visit to the doctor. I am 52, currently marathon training and feeling healthy but am now totally terrified. I am being fast tracked for a colonoscopy within 2 weeks.

I know I need to stop reading stuff online about the results etc. but I am glad I stumbled on this Forum. I have no question to ask really just feel I need to express myself and hopefully hear back from someone who may be able to ease my thoughts.

Thanks in advance and hope you are all ok.

  • Hi,

I am sorry that you are going through this difficult time.

I also experienced this worry last year after experiencing blood, along with a change in bowel habits. My FIT test was in the 90s, and I remember being scared for the colonoscopy. However, nothing sinister at all was found from my colonoscopy, and the biopsies were all clear :) the actual procedure was a little painful/uncomfortable at times, but nothing unmanageable.

Hope this can offer some reassurance that a high FIT test doesn’t always mean bad news. Fingers crossed that everything goes well for you and you feel better soon!

  • Thank you Petal88. I just want it all to happen now but I need to play the waiting game. I know it will be a few days before I get a date for the colonoscopy so somehow need to not think about it. It just seems like such a high result. Fingers crossed!

Really glad to hear you were all clear.

    Thank you once again

  • I know it's hard but try not to worry or think about it! I work in a gp surgery and often have to file the results of fit tests and cervical screenings. Its craazy how many come back positive and then negative once they have further investigations and testing! I would say we get at least 8 positive a week (out of approx 30) and we only get 1 or 2 a year that are positive after the further testing! ️

  • I had a fit score of 168 with no real symptoms other than a bit of blood and mucus still feel ok which is scary , had a colonoscopy and was told i had a 5 cm tumour having an operation soon , just make sure you follow up on your appointments , I cannot ease your thoughts but bear in mind lots of other things can cause a high fit score so try not to worry unless there is something to worry about, good luck

  • Thanks for replying. That’s good to hear from your end of the system, hopefully I can get some good news soon.

  • Thanks for that, sorry to hear about your situation but sounds like everything is happening quite quickly for you. Yes, it seems other things can cause the high results too, fingers crossed. All the best to you.
