Possible lymphoma symptoms

Hi everyone,

Almost 4 weeks ago I randomly felt a lump on my neck (left side just above the collarbone). It was the size of an egg and I am almost certain it has only recently grown to that size. My GP arranged an urgent 2-week referral to the ENT department and I had bloods done. She said it might be cancer but it could be other things too.

The blood tests came back normal, although my LDH was slightly low. I have an underactive thyroid and their levels were within range too. Since then, I have felt tired, a little under the weather, nauseous and I can sometimes feel a slight pressure in my throat.

My appointment is on Friday and I'm staying positive but there is a part of me freaking out about this. Other than an underactive thyroid, I'm 39 and very healthy. I eat healthily, I don't smoke, drink and exercise a lot (3-4 times a month). Has anyone else been diagnosed with similar symptoms? I know the one on my neck is obviously a symptom but the others seem too vague and could be anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

  • Hi csmobro and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear about the lump on your neck, as well as your other symptoms, and for the worry they are understandably causing.

Many of our members have found themselves in a similar situation so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will be along soon to share their experiences and advice.

If you'd like to talk any of this through with one of our cancer nurses you can do so on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

We're thinking of you csmobro and wishing you all the best with your appointment on Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • Thanks for your response. I’m waiting for the biopsy results but the doctors think it is lymphoma. For anyone else who has any similar symptoms, make sure you go to your doctors straight away.

  • Hi,

My husband had the same presentation, three years ago, take one step at a time, there are treatments and help should it be lymphoma, it's normal to be anxious, take someone to your appointment with you.  Waiting for results is horrible wish you well

  • Hello csmobro. Sounds like you are in exactly the same position as me. I noted a lump at my left collarbone just after Christmas, and my GP dragged me in quickly for a feel. She set a 2-week consultation at the hospitall. Since then I had a CAT scan and now 5 days ago had a biopsy taken . I am waiting very nervously for the results, which I am told take 7 to 10 days. I also had a blood test taken for JAK2 (???).

Other symptoms that I have been suffering are EXTREMELY bad itching with absolutely no rash all over my body, for the last 4 months. The GP has tried 3 separate courses of antibiotics, with zero result. She also tried antihistimines with equally zero result. (I was for one week taking 5 tablets per day!!). My energy is quite low, and the annoying thing is that until October I was quite fit, using a Bike trainer, and also out on the road with my mountain bike.

I really hope the best for you, and you need to take comfort that you are not alone.

Please update your situation when you have, hopefully, good news!

  • Hey Pippins, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re in a similar position to me. I can’t believe you’ve been experiencing symptoms for so long. That must have been awful for you.

Another similarity is how healthy we are. I lost 10kg of weight last year. I eat well, workout 4-6 times a week and was the healthiest I’ve ever been and now this happens. It just makes this all feel so surreal. I had prepared myself for the worst and when they told me what they thought that it is most likely lymphoma I must admit I cried but it was almost like a release after a 2 weeks of waiting for this day.

I’m keeping everything crossed for you and your message genuinely means a lot too. Let’s keep each other updated and keep everything crossed

  • Hi csmobro. I have had results from Biopsy and CT Scan. I am afraid to say it is Hodgkins Lymphoma stage 3. Yesterday I had a P.E.T. CT Scan, due a consultant face-to-face next week , and then week Monday an Echo-cardiogram. They can then formulate a program of drugs to set me on. You can imagine that some tears fell from a 73 year old Male. My wife is being absolutely wonderful in support. At the moment everything is surreal, and I am very slowly having to accept that I have Cancer.

I hope your findings are not as bad. Do let me know. Good Luck.

  • Im so sorry to hear about your diagnosis  that must have been such an awful shock for you. Crying is completely natural. When I had my ultrasound, they told me what they thought it was and I cried. I’m so glad your wife has been so supportive. It makes such a difference.

So do you know when you’ll likely start treatment? Were the recent results for a core biopsy? I’ve just had my fine needle biopsy results and they have confirmed it is b-cell non-Hodgkins lymphoma but they need to do a core biopsy to find out the exact type. I have that on Tuesday but I have no idea when I’ll have my PET scan. My first meeting with the haematology team won’t be until March 1st and I have no idea when I’ll start chemotherapy. It’s my 40th on March 19th so Sod’s Law it will start around then. Having said that, I just want to start as soon as possible and try and beat this thing.

Thank you for updating me and I’m so sorry you’ve had this news. I’m keeping everything crossed for you

  • Sorry to jump on, also sorry to here about both of your recent diagnosis..

I have the same symptoms, only had them alot longer but have been fighting so hard for tests,(kept putting it down to my hypothyroidism even tho my levels are managed) I had a USS in August but the Dr didn't check all my lumps (I know now since my 2nd USS) my lumps all grew my specialist told me he'd see me in 6 months time in December didn't even look at any of the lumps I was concerned about, so I returned to my gp after Christmas, had my 2nd USS on 10th feb, he is concerned about a lump on my left by my collar bone, I was then put on a 2WW for a CT scan which hasn't happened yet, ENT or GP cannot tell me why but it seems it was declined. ENT have put me through for another CT and a biopsy. The biopsy isn't untill 6th March though and that was my ENT Dr fighting for it to be moved from the 18th March. I feel so let down so far by them.

Again like yourselves don't smoke, drink and not a unhealthy person.

Rambling abit but the question I have is where your lumps painful?

The whole of the left side of my neck is really painfull today, I believe the lumps have gotten worse since my last USS.

  • Don’t apologise at all :)

I'm so sorry to hear your story. That sound so stressful and the fact that it’s been going on this long can only make your ‘scanxiety’ even more worrying.

I don’t understand why people in the NHS are so incompetent. I’m waiting for a PET scan, as I can’t start treatment or even see haematology until I have it done, and the registrar from ENT, who promised me she would check the referrals, hadn’t even made the referral in the first place so everything will be delayed. It’s only by 9 days but that’s still not good enough. I’m sure you are doing this but I’ve learnt I need to be a polite nuisance in order to get things moving.

In terms of pain, there’s no pain with my lump. I have several lipomas on my tummy and they feel more painful when I push and prod them.

Please keep us updated and don’t be afraid to push for the tests and scans you need to rule anything out. I’m keeping everything crossed for you.

  • 9 days means you could have started treatment 9 days earlier! Finished treatment 9 days earlier. Every day counts when your waiting for tests! Just horrendous at the moment.

I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in June last year, honestly couldnt fault the treatment id receievd from them then, just had the all clear from my first smear since, now this.

It might just be pressure pain because my neck is currently huge with these lumps.

I hope you get your pet scan soon and can get treatment started! I think the waiting makes everything so much worse!

    Thankyou for the reply
