The C word was used today. Endometrial thickness and ovarian cysts - need a hysteroscopy.

My situation :

Perimenopausal, very heavy periods, sometimes bleeding for weeks or months. Iron levels 9. 19m thickness of endometrium, cystic womb, no polyps found, two cysts of 5 and 7 cm on one ovary.

Have been told I needed a hystoroscopy, ablation, mirena coil.

Today had 3 biopsies taken as Dr was concerned about this risk of cancer. She's never mentioned cancer before. Had mirena inserted.

Should I be worried?

  • Hello MiskinLina,

You did well to get this checked and I can understand why you are feeling worried especially if the doctor expressed concern about the risk of cancer. You can find information on our website on the biopsy of the womb lining and on the hysteroscopy and you should hopefully get your biopsy results back within the next couple of weeks. It's normal to be worried especially after hearing the word cancer but it might be that the doctor wants to rule this out and there are many other conditions too which could explain symptoms such as endometrial thickness and the ovarian cysts they have found. The wait for results and answers is such an anxious time when time seems to stand still and our mind goes into overdrive. It can be tempting in a situation like this to try and find answers online but keep well away from Google if you can as this will only make you feel more anxious and tends to bring up only the worst and least likely scenario. There are helpful tips on this page to help you cope as you are waiting for important news.

I hope that you will also hear from other members of our community who have experienced similar symptoms before and who have also needed to have a hysteroscopy. I hope you won't mind but I have edited your title slightly to include more information about your symptoms so that it can be more easily spotted by others who've been in a similar situation before.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern and that you can be treated fully and successfully very soon.

    Best wishes,
