Core biopsy

Hello,

I went to the doctor a couple of weeks ago as I felt a lump in my right breast. I was referred to the breast clinic where I had an examination - during which I was told it was probably a cyst and that I'd only get an ultrasound due to being 39. At the ultrasound I always again told it was just a cyst but they would give me a mammogram anyway because I'm almost 40. I was told that I'd be called i to see the consultant and discuss the results however while I was in the waiting room I was then called back in for an ultrasound as they had found something in my left breast, it all happened very quickly and I had an ultrasound guided core biopsy where they took 4 clips from the area and put a clip inside to mark where they had taken the biopsy from. I was told I'd get results in 2-3 weeks, do anyone know why they would do a core biopsy and send it off? I have ready that they only send it off for testing if it is suspicious or doesn't look right when they take fluid? I am so confused and scared and the waiting is so nerve wracking, is my first time experiencing anything like this and I don't know what to think.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all xx

  • Hi, i am 45 and recently had a lump, I went to urgent one stop shop and had mammogram, ultrasound and 3 biopsies, but I don't know if that's standard or if they were concerned? Sorry that isn't probably much help. I hope you are ok and have good results x

  • Thank you so much for your reply, did your results come back clear? I think my worries are coming from the fact that they became so concerned so quickly with what they had found, I didn't even know it was there, after being told by the GP, the lady who examined me and then the after having the ultrasound that it was just a cyst that being immediately called in after the mammogram for a core biopsy it just threw me a bit, it all happened within the space of an hour so to then have to wait 3 weeks til know why they were so concerned is scary. Hopefully it's nothing, I have read that 80% of biopsies come back clear but you also read so many other things online that your mind can't help but wander, I'm trying to keep level headed for my children, they don't see their dad so I'm all the have and that worries me too. Really hope you are doing ok, thank you again for replying to me xx

  • No mine was stage 2 cancer sadly, that was 11 dec and I'm having surgery 24 Jan. The waiting for results is a pig. Hope yours are negative xx

  • Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear that, wishing you all the best, good luck in your surgery, thank you for taking the time out to talk to me. It really is so scary.

  • Of you don't mind me asking, how long did you wait to get your results and how did they tell you? I was told I'd get an appointment for results but I've also read that they can give your results to your GP or phone you? Xx

  • I had my appt 22 November I think, got results 11 Dec, then had an MRI 18 dec, got more results 22 Dec, and now surgery 24 Jan. When they phoned to confirm appt they wouldn't tell me anything over the phone (but it was a secretary I think and I know they aren't allowed too), it was all very quick. The mammogram picked up 2 lumps and MRI a further 2 satellite lumps, so too many for original plan of lumpectomy so I'm having mastectomy and DIEP next week x

  • Just wanted to say good luck on your surgery tomorrow, hope it goes well xxx
