Sedation didn’t work?

Hi,

I had a gastroscopy and colonoscopy on Friday with sedation. They asked me if I felt relaxed, I said no so they gave me another dose but I still felt no difference. I felt like I was totally awake during the gastroscopy, feeling like I couldn’t breath and retching badly. Then during the colonoscopy we were discussing what was good on Netflix. Should I have been able to hold a full conversation like this? I also found it very painful in parts. Afterwords I was so happy it was over but the day after kept having flashbacks and can’t stop crying. Is this normal? When I have had sedation before I have felt totally knocked out with no memory and no crying.

thank you

  • Hi CathyBC,

I'm sorry that your experience wasn't a positive one and it can be natural to have flashbacks of events that were unexpected or difficult, but you did well to get through it. Both the colonoscopy and gastroscopy can be done while you're awake and can be uncomfortable, but it's still important to say how you're feeling at appointments and let them know if it's painful at any point. If there's anything you're concerned about do contact your doctor and I hope your next appointment goes better.
