Had colonoscopy today, worried about results

I had my colonoscopy today (it was so painful I had extra fentanyl plus gas and air) they said nothing found or biopsied, however it was only on the drive home that I looked at the letter and it says "thank you for attending your procedure today. There were first degree haemorrhoids (which bleed only) in the anal canal. A copy of today's report will be sent to your GP and your consultant. Your clinician referred you on a 2 week wait suspected cancer pathway. Following your investigation today, further investigations are required as lower GI cancer was not excluded. Therefore you will remain on the cancer pathway'

I had sedation so I'm only just now getting bit worried about that, as I don't know what it means. Discharge was done verbally and so I didn't get to ask questions about that part of the letter.

I will call either GP or endoscopy tomorrow to ask but anyone know why it says that, is it a mistake?

  • So I called the Endoscopy unit back who were not overly helpful in explaining why if nothing was found I need further investigation. So I called the cancer nurse helpline and just didn't feel like I got much empathy, just a very curt 'your results will probably have to go back to the consultant to decide if you need more investigation so just wait for them to call'. I'm in tears worrying and feeling silly for being worried.

  • It’s no wonder you’re worried. That’s a very ambiguous letter , however I think it’s probably the piles that were responsible for the bleeding and the elevated FIT test.     Unfortunately it’s a matter of waiting until you hear more.  The anxiety associated with waiting is awful.   I really empathise.      I had a colonoscopy yesterday too , for rectal bleeding .  All ok except for Diverticular Disease and piles !    It was like a conveyor belt and the only information I got was print outs from the Patient Website !

  • They were really good, it's just this bit of the letter causing me stress. It feels like Schroedingers diagnosis.  Doesn't help that my blood test results are out of whack with my liver GGT being really high. Going to call GP shortly
