I'm no expert, but I think they tend to call you in, regardless of whether the results are positive or negative. For one thing, if they only called people in for positive results, then people would be utterly terrified once they got the call to come in and for another, even negative results might need to be discussed. People might have questions, like "is it certain that it's not cancer?" or "is there anything else that could be causing my symptoms that I need to follow up on?"

When I had my yearly follow-up after thyroid cancer, I was told they would ring me with the results. Instead, I got a letter making an in-person appointment. I freaked, thinking that had got to mean they had found something worrying. They hadn't. I was completely cancer-free. They just felt it was better to talk in-person.

I think it was the off-hand and brusque way that I was spoken to which increased my anxiety - I immediately thought she knows the results are bad and doesn't want to give me the opportunity to ask questions. Good to know you are cancer free - may it long continue.
