speedy results - should I be worried?

I found a lump but wasn't sure and eventually went to the GP 4 weeks later. I was referred to the breast clinic and seen 2 weeks later, last week, on the Wednesday. Today, Monday, 5 days after 3 biopsies  I received a very brusque call from the breast clinic saying an appointment had been made for me for tomorrow morning and that I could bring someone with me for the results. Call lasted well under a minute. It left me feeling very shaky and even more anxious than before. Do they ever give out negative results by phone?

  • I'm no expert, but I think they tend to call you in, regardless of whether the results are positive or negative. For one thing, if they only called people in for positive results, then people would be utterly terrified once they got the call to come in and for another, even negative results might need to be discussed. People might have questions, like "is it certain that it's not cancer?" or "is there anything else that could be causing my symptoms that I need to follow up on?"

When I had my yearly follow-up after thyroid cancer, I was told they would ring me with the results. Instead, I got a letter making an in-person appointment. I freaked, thinking that had got to mean they had found something worrying. They hadn't. I was completely cancer-free. They just felt it was better to talk in-person.

Best of luck with your appointment. I hope you get good news.
