benign?

3 weeks ago I found a small lump high up in my right breast, far up from the nipple. After panicking like crazy reading the referral notes from the nurse at the GP (hard non mobile) even though I can move it side to side.

I opted for a private appointment and ultrasound this week. The Dr said all looked benign and it was a lipoma or cyst At the nhs one stop clinic today,  I was told fibroadenoma in the ultrasound and had a biopsy which shocked me. The consultant didn't seem too concerned and said its due to me being 39 rather than anything suspect they've seen. Does this sound right for a fibroadenoma?

  • I know, me either! My husband I think thought it might happen as he couldn’t eat and felt sick. I am hoping in 6 months I will look back and think of this as a bloody nightmare! But be glad I found my lump early. My son is doing amazing but the treatment is hard. He’s should be past the worst of it by end of January. Xx

    when are your results?

  • I think you will be in 6 months time! I'm glad to hear your son is coping so well and hope the rest of his recovery gets easier.

I checked with the secretary today and the results weren't back. I've no idea what to think really. The private dr initially thought there were no concerns for my first ultrasound and recommended the nhs appointment for the "2%" check of needle biopsy. I hope in worse case things are found early too.

I hope you get your treatment plan soon and cope well. It must have been one hell of a shock today xx

  • Ye it’s been a shock, but just have to get on with it now. Hope everything goes well for you, :)

  • thank you. sending lots of hugs your way xx

  • Thank you, let me know how you get on on here and will make sure to check this :)

  • Hi Rooftile,

I am so sorry to hear that your results showed cancer and know just what a shock this must come as. However there are some positives - 1) You have caught it early 2) It is oestrogen positive, and 3) You haven't got the BRCA gene. I lost my Mum to secondary breast cancer and, when I was first diagnosed, I was terrified that I would go the same way.

My diagnoses were the same as yours. I have since had 2 bouts within a year of each other, but I am still here and living a busy and fulfilling life 14years on. You will have a difficult few months, but you should then bounce back to normal. Try to look at this as a blip in the road and you'll soon be out the other side. I am so sorry to hear that you have been dealt a double whammy and hope that your son is making good progress now.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thank you for your reply Jolamine (lovely name). I am feeling positive about it. It’s pure luck I even found the lump. My great aunt had a lumpectomy about 30 years ago and died about 25yrs later af ter giving everyone *** in the care home in her later years  :) it’s so good to hear you are all good. I feel shocked but reassured and juts need to get on and get myself sorted so I can look after my boy. What a bloody year. My name is Gemma :)

  • Hi Gemma,

Life can throw us some googlies at times, but we gain strength from all of these experiences and become stronger people in the long run. Have they told you what type of breast cancer it is and when you are likely to have surgery? I lost my mum to secondary breast cancer 26 years ago. It had spread to her liver, lungs, bone and brain. Diagnosis, treatment and after care have all changed dramatically since then and there was just no comparison between the experience which we both had. What age is your son and are you his principal carer?

You will find this forum a good place for support and advice as you travel this journey. Please remember that we are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Shiv,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts, fibroadenoma or due to hormonal changes. It is a fact that only 20% of all referrals to the breast clinic, turn out to have cancer, so the odds are still in your favour. It is good to hear that your consultant doesn't seem to be too concerned. You probably wouldn't have had a biopsy, if you were a little younger, as younger people are less likely to to have it. However the incidence increases as we approach 40, so it is always more reassuring to make absolutely certain that this is not the case.

I sincerely hope that you get your results through soon and that nothing untoward is found. Even if the worst should happen and it is caught early, it should be perfectly treatable. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer within a year of each other. That was 14 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Please keep in touch and let us know when you hear anything. We are always here for you.

Keeping everything crossed for good news.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
