Breast clinic - appointment time

Hi all, new here. Found a lump. Saw Dr, referred for 2ww. Got phone call from clinic with my appointment for this Thursday however I was told that my appointment was for 30 minutes. I was under impression it would be longer. Would anyone mind sharing what they were told vs how long their appointment actually lasted. Thank you xx

  • I developed a lump behind a nipple as a result of a drug which was prescribed for my prostate (I am a man), and referral from my GP gave me a hospital appointment in about 10 days. Apart from queueing with female patients the appointment itself was very quick (a matter of minutes), and the report of no malignancy came to my GP two days later. I felt that I had been given the same treatment which a woman might have experienced. My drug was changed and the symptoms disappeared. I still have the prostate problem a few years later. I would add that I have twice had minor surgery to remove basal cell carcinomas (unfortunately they both had to be repeated). In both cases I was treated very quicklya few days after diagnosis, one of them being in a private clinic to avoid the hospital queue, but financed by the NHS.

  • Hi. Sorry you find yourself here.

I think it all depends, it’s flexible timing.

The breast clinic here schedules 30 minute initial appointments.
I guess the luckiest are seen and on their way after their 30 minutes slot.

My 30 minutes lasted hours, probably 20 minutes with consultant, then waiting for and having mammograms, then waiting for and having ultrasound and biopsies, then another 20 minutes with consultant.

I hope it all goes well for you on Thursday. Hugs xx

  • Hi. Sorry to hear of you’re awaiting an appointment too. My understanding is it depends upon your breast clinic at the hosp. Some are one stop shops where everything is done on one apt. Other hospitals have initial consultation, then another apt for a scan etc. mine says allow for 2.5 hours.

    Fingers crossed for you xx

  • Hi there,

I was given a 2ww appointment and I was seen exactly 2 weeks from the day I went to see the GP. The letter I receive about my appointment stated it could take up to 3 hours at the actual appointment to complete all the necessary tests, my appointment was at 3:20 and I was out of the hospital less than an hour later. It entirely depends on what tests need to be done in clinic, I’m 21 so I only required an ultrasound so I was in and out pretty quickly. Tests they perform can include an ultrasound, mammogram and a biopsy but it’s entirely dependent. Mammograms are usually only preformed on older women due to younger women having denser breast tissue and depending on what a lump looks like on an ultrasound a biopsy might not be required as was the case for me.

So it entirely depends on what tests you’ll need at the clinic, if you just require an ultrasound you could be out within 30-45 minutes, if your lumps requires further investigation it’ll be longer.

This was my experience so I hope this helps a little xx

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply x

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply. I haven’t received my letter yet and my appt is tomorrow x

  • Thank you for your reply. My appointment is tomorrow and I haven’t received the letter yet. I just need to manage expectations with work as to how long I’ll be gone for. I think I’ll allow for 2 hours and if I’m back sooner then all the better xx

  • Hi there,

Absolutely no trouble at all and yeah you’re better off allowing for more time just in case. It’s strange you haven’t received a letter yet considering your appointment is tomorrow, my letter came about a week after I had an appointment with my GP so I’m not sure why you haven’t received one yet. But the standard is 3 hours but as I said I was in and out in less than an hour.

I hope everything goes well for you and you get a good result from clinic tomorrow xx

  • Sending hugs for tomorrow xx

  • Hi J_79,

When I went for my first appointment I saw the consultant and was examined, and that was all on that day. I had been told that I could be there for a couple of hours. They wanted to book me in for a mammogram and ultrasound, but there were no appointments available as apparently the relevant people were all involved in surgeries that day. I then had a phone call the same day for the mammogram etc a few days later xx
