2 Week Referral for Ovarian Cyst

I have just been diagnosed with a decent sized cyst on my right ovary (6.4cm largest diameter). It was described as multi- locular , thick walled and haemorrhagic and my GP has put me on a 2 week urgent referral. In his words, he isn’t overly concerned that it is anything sinister but that the gynae wait times in my area are nearly 12 months for routine referrals. He said that given the size he’s confident it’ll need to come out and the sooner the better.

In terms of symptoms, all I had was really bad cramping for 3 days just after my period. I have always had heavy, painful periods (which has been the case since I was 13 so nothing new) so no changes there. He suspected endometriosis and only sent me for the scan to be thorough, I am glad he did. The cyst seems to be an incidental finding to the pain, as if the pain was from the cyst it would have most likely have twisted or burst which isn’t the case as the pain resolved.

I am panicking a little now, I am only 26 and this has come as a shock. I work in an industry that is allied to medicine so I know what an urgent referral means. He has referred me for a CA125 test, but I know this isn’t confirmatory. I know that a haemorrhagic cyst in someone with heavy periods is most likely to be an endometrioma but I can’t help worrying. Has anyone had any similar experiences to this? I think I just want to write my thoughts down.

  • My main worry is the fact that I haven’t had children. I’m 26 so it hasn’t really come up so far but it’s something I want in the near future and I feel like they will take something out that will affect my fertility. I understand that it’s for my own safety it’s just a lot to deal with at the moment.

I am so glad recovery is going okay so far xx

  • I am not sure what my CA125 status is as I’m getting a blood test for that on Monday. I think my gynae appointment on Tuesday won’t reveal much , they will need the CA 125 and MRI back before they can comment I think.

iys just so much to deal with. I had no symptoms to being on a 2 week referral and it’s scary

  • I am glad you have had answers back from your MRI and that it’s nothing to worry about for you xx

  • Thank you for reaching out. Honestly, I think I will be in the same position as you and I won’t know what it is until it is removed. I am so glad my GP sent me for the ultrasound and has been so thorough x

  • I am so sorry that it has been so painful for the first few days.

I am just a bit worried as I’m 26 with no children. I am anticipating that the likelihood is that I will lose an ovary (in order to remove the cyst) so my fertility will be cut in half . I am in a serious relationship but children is not something we want to have this year or next year. I feel like this situation is maybe forcing our hand when it’s not ideal right now. I have just started a new job where I train and go to uni for 3 years … may leave isn’t ideal in that time x

  • Hi yes does sound very similar and no course I don’t mind sharing ….

when I had my consultation and signed forms for consent the surgeon recommended open surgery as they were really not sure what they were dealing with and didn’t want to chance keyhole Incase it burst which could spread cancer cells around my body so we agreed open which was gunna be a cut from my belly button down  … however on the day of the surgery he came round to see me and said he had been sat the night before looking at my images and thought it could be easier to do keyhole and then bring it out through my c section saving me a big scar down my stomach but still had to sign consent that it may change wen I’m under…

I was under for about 3 and half hours and don’t know anything till I woke up in recovery … I spent a night in hospital and was discharged the following night I’ve managed pain just with paracetamol and everyday is getting slightly easier xx

  • Just an update if anyone was interested or comes across this thread.

My CA125 was in normal limits and I had test for additional tumour markers (sorry I’m not sure which ones) all came back normal too. I had an MRI and had an appointment with the consultant today.

Surprisingly, my MRI had shown the cyst but also some infection and necrotic tissue on the affected ovary. It seems that my ovary may have twisted (ovarian torsion) at some point but may have resolved itself or is only twisted a bit. They can’t tell whether it is still twisted in the MRI. The consultant was surprised that I have had no symptoms such as fever or vomiting, which has lead her to believe it might have been only twisted for a short time.

I need surgery to take the cyst out at the very least but this may also mean the ovary needs to come out if the whole thing is necrotic (again they couldn’t tell the extent of the damage from MRI). They may also need to switch to open surgery during the procedure if my ovary contains lots of puss/infection.

I am relived that it doesn’t look like a tumour. I was very surprised that it looks like there has been a torsion due to my lack of symptoms apart from the bad cramping for a couple of days.
