Ct scans - fibroids or cancer?

Hi everyone

I went to the drs a couple of weeks ago with stomach aches, bleeding ( which is not unusual as I’ve had many issues with unscheduled bleeding over the last few years which was investigated  ) and I could feel a lump in my abdomen. My dr felt it too and said it could be a large fibroid and was put on the two week cancer referral.

Anyway, I went for a ct scan of my abdomen, pelvis and chest over a week ago and today received an appointment for the gynaecology oncology department for next week. There is no accompanying letter, just the date and time of the appointment.

What I was wondering is, would a ct scan show enough information for a doctor to  be able to differentiate between a fibroid or cancer?

Feeling anxious about it and although know I’m not going to know for sure until I go to the appointment, a weeks a long time to live in worryland and I’d be interested in anyones thoughts.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Janegrey,

Not exactly the same but I have been in a similar sort of situation recently. I was referred on 2ww for an ovarian cyst, and after the first appointment sent for an MRI - I was told the results would come through the post. Then I got a text with a gynaecology oncology appointment for the following week. Like you, I was really worried. Having had that appointment though, I think it is technically labelled as that while you are in the 2ww system. In my case the MRI showed some features that may be cancer but also some that were more indicative of benign, so I think you keep the label until they can give a definitive no, if that makes sense? Doesn't help the waiting I'm sure. Take care x

  • Hi Sunflowergirl123

Yes, that does make sense -  I’m sure they have to treat it all as urgent until they definitely know what they’re looking at. I shall try to worry less - maybe!! Good luck with your surgery and thanks for replying x

  • I know it is easier said than done but try to keep busy in the mean time. Let us know how the appointment goes, we'll all be keeping our fingers crossed for you :) x
