Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Misty

welcome , they are generally in 2 weeks it’s probably that where you are going is quiet it don’t mean it’s more suspicious xx good luck love Lara xxx

  • Hi Misty,

I went to the doctor on a Thursday, had my first appointment at the breast clinic on the Monday, and then biopsy etc on the Thursday. I don’t think this is unusual- you and I have just been lucky that there were appointments available. I don’t think we need to ready anything into it. I’m now terrified, since I have the appointment for results on Thursday morning xx

  • Hi goonwr

It is such a terrible time it's just not  thing that I would ever be thinking of the C word myself.

I hope all goes well for you on Thursday I'll be sending positive thoughts and hugs

    Please keep me updated xx

  • Hi Missty,

A very warm welcome to our forum. The appointment should come through within 2 weeks from the date of referral. Some areas take a little longer than this, due to pressure of work. There is no great significance as to how soon you are seen - they usually fit you in for the first available appointment. This is always an anxious wait, so you will find that the sooner you are seen, the easier it is to cope.

Try to keep yourself occupied with a pastime or work - it does help to take your mind off things. It is not unusual to suffer all sorts of emotional changes at this time and to cry a lot. Don't worry about the tears - crying is a great stress reliever.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hey Missty,

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear that you’re having a tough time with worry.

like others have said, it’s all very normal to receive your referral very quickly. I received a referral review letter in the post the day after my doctors appointment, but then it took a few weeks to get my appointment (due to the waitlist in my area and recent strikes) whereas others received their appointments much quicker than me.

I’m pleased you’ve managed to get an appointment so soon, but please don’t read anything into this.

it’s incredibly hard to focus on anything else when you’re so anxious, but honestly, having a good cry and getting those emotions out are so important. I hope you have a good support network around you - do try and keep yourself busy if you can. Watch a few episodes of something to take your mind off things or take yourself out for a lovely walk somewhere pretty and soak up nature.

Let us know how you get on, we are all here to chat anytime xx

  • Thank you. It really is a horrible time waiting, especially now I know all the tests are done and they have results. I’m dreading Thursday but at the same time can’t wait to get it over with. I’ll let you all know the outcome, good or bad xx

  • Hi missty1982,

I wouldn’t panic I had a txt the morning after my GP appointment saying about the referral and had my appointment a week later, at my breast clinic I had my ultrasound, mammogram and biopsy done at the same time, I think they refer to it as a “one stop clinic” meaning they do it all in one appointment (if needed of course), I think as others have said they have had appointments separately, I think this is just to the type clinic and how that specific clinics works so I really wouldn’t read too much into it just yet. I hope your appointment goes well sending love and have my fingers crossed for you xx

  • I think that's the same where I'm going. Everything all at once.

I ended up telling my mum yesterday. I couldn't cope, found it really hard at work and all because I found a dark stain a finger or two, away from where the lump is. I think finding that took me over the edge.

    Anyone else had that?

  • I’ve been referred to a breast clinic after having an appointment with my GP yesterday.

i initially wanted to see a GP because I was concerned about a red area and potential small red lump but the GP wasn’t concerned as the redness and lump had really gone done. However she did notice that my nipple on the same breast was slightly inverted and was a bit concerned.

to me it doesn’t look any different but now I’m freaking out and concerned! Waiting to book an appointment for the Breast clinic.

I am finding great comfort hearing everyone else’s stories and knowing I’m not alone. This is probably the most anxious I’ve been in my life xx
