Urgent referral for breast lump

Hi all,

I’m new here, hope you’re all doing ok - thanks for reading my post.

it’s 2.40am and having real trouble sleeping at the moment as the panic has set in - I’ve been ok up until now.

I noticed some lumpy areas in my left breast and got an appointment last Friday at the docs, who have referred me to the breast clinic under the 2 week period (still awaiting an appointment).

in 2021, I found a lumpy area in my right breast in the inner lower quadrant and had a ultrasound which revealed it was a lipoma. I mentioned this to the doc last Friday who didn’t examine this breast. I have now realised that what I assumed was the lipoma in the same area is now possibly an additional hard lump and I’m now worrying myself silly - I don’t remember the lipoma feeling so hard but have assumed for a long time it was the original lipoma.

I know it’s worth awaiting my appointment at the breast clinic  rather than going back to the doctors as they can’t do anything, it’s just trying to manage the anxiety and the horrible spiralling thoughts.

please let me know if you have any tips for handling the worry for anyone else in the same boat - thanks for reading my early morning ramblings!

love to you all x

  • Hi Jls,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

We nearly all feel the same when waiting for an appointment and our over-active imaginations don't help at all. You will find that the staff are very understanding when you attend. Not all lumps are cancerous. Many turn out to be benign cysts or fibrous changes. It is a fact that only 2 people out of every 10 who attend the breast clinic, will get a cancer diagnosis. There are no guarantees, but it augers well that your lump is smooth and moveable.

I sincerely hope that all turns out well for you tomorrow. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Morning all

Same as you all went to see doctor on Friday had letter today for breat clinic week today

Is ut normal for appointment to come so fast

I found one lump in right upper side of breast but during doctor exam found a further 2 in arm pit can not get it off my brain and had a melt down friday night

  • Hi Jls, welcome to the forum!

I am thinking of you and hope your appointment goes well at the breast clinic today. So sorry to hear that the stress of the appointment has caused so much anxiety - it’s a really horrible time waiting for the first appointment.

this is my second time at the breast clinic and each time I’ve had a consultation, before coming back for an ultrasound appointment at a later date.

I have quite lumpy fibrous tissue in my breasts which can feel rope like in texture. I had a tiny pea like lump in my left breast which the consultant thought was fibrous tissue. I felt like I could push this one around between my fingers. The lipoma in my right breast was smooth, but felt a bit more fixed. It wasn’t rock hard, but wasn’t super soft - they don’t seem bothered by either lumps but will confirm at the ultrasound.

I hope you’re doing okay and hope that you’ve had reassurance from your appointment xx

  • Hi all,

I was in and out in 20 minutes!?

Straight into a room with the consultant, student and nurse. He had a very brief feel of my left breast at the sides, said felt normal and then on the right breast were the issue was. Said felt normal and just a dense fibrous breast. I thought the examination would have been more thorough? Just felt where I noticed the texture mainly.

radiologist came in immediately and scanned the area I was concerned about and said it was normal tissue but did not scan the entire breast. They did not feel or examine my armpits etc etc

Im very relieved it’s all normal but half of me is like, did you check enough? But then again they are extremely experienced and I know nothing so I’m just going to trust the professionals xx

  • Misty

welcome , they are generally in 2 weeks it’s probably that where you are going is quiet it don’t mean it’s more suspicious xx good luck love Lara xxx

  • Hi Misty,

I went to the doctor on a Thursday, had my first appointment at the breast clinic on the Monday, and then biopsy etc on the Thursday. I don’t think this is unusual- you and I have just been lucky that there were appointments available. I don’t think we need to ready anything into it. I’m now terrified, since I have the appointment for results on Thursday morning xx

  • Hi goonwr

It is such a terrible time it's just not  thing that I would ever be thinking of the C word myself.

I hope all goes well for you on Thursday I'll be sending positive thoughts and hugs

    Please keep me updated xx

  • Hi Missty,

A very warm welcome to our forum. The appointment should come through within 2 weeks from the date of referral. Some areas take a little longer than this, due to pressure of work. There is no great significance as to how soon you are seen - they usually fit you in for the first available appointment. This is always an anxious wait, so you will find that the sooner you are seen, the easier it is to cope.

Try to keep yourself occupied with a pastime or work - it does help to take your mind off things. It is not unusual to suffer all sorts of emotional changes at this time and to cry a lot. Don't worry about the tears - crying is a great stress reliever.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
