Breast Cancer- how quick is recovery after surgery?

Hi after 2 years of my first scan (all clear) came back to the clinic and have biopsy and not very optimistic doctor asking me questions like do I have someone to look after my Twin boys (8yearolds) if I would have to have surgey. Nothing is 100% yet but I worried sick how amI gone be able to look after them when/if I come after surgery. I'm a single full time working mum and no idea how physically draining surgery will be? No family in UK. Big friends support but everyone is working and have their own families to look after. Does anyone been able to care for their children after surgery? Thir father has a nonmolestation order in place so that's option is out.

Would be grateful for any advice.. thank you

  • Hi Schola,

I am really sorry to hear about your situation but sure there will be a lot of replies from this forum for you . As you haven’t mentioned what kind of surgery is planned ,I will just tell you about my experience.

I had a bilateral mastectomy last year , stayed in hospital over night and came home with two drains that stayed in for more than a week . I had no pain ,but was not driving for a few weeks and not suppose to lift anything either. Felt very well but couldn’t do much which was quite frustrating. Have you got any family who could possibly take children to school ?
I cooked and baked before my surgery and froze loads of meals .

    Take care xx

    welcome

i had a lunpectomy as a first operation then had a second operation fully auxiliary nodes removed , I like rumple said had a drain on the 2 nd operation , to be honest on both operations nothing changed only that I couldn’t drive but there wasn’t a day where I had to stay in bed or anything the worst thing for me was I had to wash my hair over the bath silly I no but that was the worst thing for me it’s easy peasy you will be great I’m sure , good luck with everything and stay here for support if you need it we are all here for you love Lara xxx

  • Hi , It depends what surgery you have . 18 yrs ago I had a wide local excision and lymph node sampling . I was in hospital overnight and just took Paracetamol for a few days . My 7 year old sat in the waiting room when I had my diagnosis ( Single parent and no one offered to either come with me or look after him or my other son aged 12. No family nearby , but my sister travelled 5.30 hours to stay with me and my ex reluctantly had the boys ( I know that’s not an option for you) Physically I was fine .
Wait to see what you are facing first then see if any friends can form a tag team to all do a little bit to help you out. I wish you all the very best and really hope you don’t have to go down this road. Xx

  • Thank you everyone so much. Still no answer they have my biopsy results but called me back for mammogram. Nurse won't tell me is it a good news or bad. Maybe it came clear and they just double checking or it came *** and want to see it better? It means a whole week of waiting. I'm in agony. Can't sleep can't eat feel bad. My dad died of cancer 2 months ago a month ago my nan. 4 years ago my mum. All died from different cancers but it is really hard to think positively.
