Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  •     Just wanted to say hope all goes well tomorrow.  I had mine in December after experiencing rectal bleeding and abnormal FITtest.  The prep was the worst bit , procedure was fine. I opted for sedation and it made everything so much easier.  I was awake throughout, watched the monitor , then within half an hour had my tea and toast and on my way home.   Was told all looked normal so that was a relief after all my worrying !  It’s hard not to over think it but I was given great advice.  Deal with facts not thoughts !!    Good luck.

  • Thanks so much Eve. Currently an hour and half into ‘prep’ and so far it’s not been too bad.
You are so right with the dealing with facts and not thoughts.
I have kind of reached the point of thinking that whatever will be will be and me worrying about it won’t change anything anyway!
Thanks again for replying it’s very much appreciated x

  • Hiya, just wanted to say that is so nice to hear all our stories are helpful... the prep and procedure are a worry but they are so not as bad as feared..but definitely do recommend the sedation!!

All is good with me, I had a call yesterday to say nothing found outside the bowel and nothing in lymph nodes so nothing else needed and now on surveillance with 6 monthly blood tests and colonoscopy and CT in a year or so...been such a journey but nhs do kick in pretty quickly....all good wishes for you tomorrow and hope all goes well x

  • Hiya Amanda,  any update on how you are? Hope u are well xx

  • Hi Helen,

it’s so lovely to hear that you have received good news, I had read your story on this thread and wondered how you had got on following your surgery. It really is so nice that people take the time to come back on here to give updates.

wishing you all the best wishes for a long and healthy future! x

  • I never wanna taste that prep ever again.

    Absolutely vile!!

  • Hi Helen , that’s great news.  So happy for you. Shows importance of knowing your own body and seeking professional help when something isn’t right.   Early detection can make such a difference.

  • Yep vile indeed! Dose 1 was absolutely fine however dose 2 got the better of me and I projectile vomited. Worrying that I’ve not had enough of the 2nd dose and won’t get a good enough prep. Trying to drink as much water as possible to flush as much through as possible.
    nightmare!

  • I had some squash on stand by to rid me of the taste straight away. I was gagging a bit on the second lot.

  • Hi,

in the spirit of this wonderful thread I thought I would pop in to update on my colonoscopy.

thankfully it all went really smoothly and it was good news- some inflammation and some internal haemorrhoids which were responsible for the bleeding.

I hope that any newbies who find this thread will find some reassurance and hope from reading another example of someone fearing the worst and having multiple symptoms but actually finding out that there was a simple explanation!

Thanks again to everyone who shares their stories on here, it really was a massive comfort to me over the last couple of days.

    best wishes to all x
